10 bolts suck!

rear #1 - bearing cap failure, death somewhere between nov and jan 04-05

rear #2 - MASSIVE amounts of metal in it, still not checked out, most likely axle bearing death - removed may 06

rear #3 - Pinion bearing is annihilated, miracle the bearing is still together, this was discovered today

My friend (works at his uncle's shop... they're done dozens if not hundreds of rears, custom cars, dragsters, etc) is gonna replace all the bearing for me and check out my Eaton to make sure it's fine and doesn't need a rebuild... best case scenario his uncle lets him do it as a side job, my cost $150 plus parts... second best his uncle doesnt let him do it as a side job, costs me $250-300 (discount from $350) plus parts... worst case scenario the bearing lets go, whoel rear gets F'd from pieces of the bearing flying around in there, will end up costing me around a grand.

I should just buy a goddamn 12 bolt already.

Which is pretty funny if you think about how ironic that is.

When Mr.Luos's finally hooks well at the track his rear will start spitting teeth like a Senior Citizen bar fight.

If you mess up your housing by having the bearing wear into rear. As long as I can have your rear for the brackets. You can have the 97 Z28 rear housing in my garage. Just got to pick the fucker up.

But ya'll have to remember, when the 10bolt was designed, the tires they had then couldn't hook for shit.

Re: 10 bolts suck!

My little 3.8 has almost destroyed the gears in the stock 10 bolt, I could only imagine making huge amounts of power.

Re: 10 bolts suck!

Don't know... I've got a 10 bolt, hooks up almost immediately, and haven't had a problem with it yet. Can't say the same for everything else, but the 10 bolt is good.

Re: 10 bolts suck!

He is referring to the 7.5/7.625 10 bolt. The 8.5 10 bolt that was used in the second gens is much stronger.

Re: 10 bolts suck!

I see... I would think that you could pick up a 2gen rear for almost nothing... especially the 74-77 years. They should be direct swap shouldn't they? Or is the rear suspension different on 3 & 4 gens from 1 & 2 gens? Did they use leaf springs on 3/4 gens? Even if not, you can modify the housing to accept the new suspension can't you... the rear itself is the same right?

No, its not a direct swap. There is alot of work involved. The placement of spring brackets and use of a torque arm. Make it a job for someone who has some welding experience.
