Cat Question

I have a 98 Rodeo with an cel code PO420, referring to a possible cat problem. I just so happen to have the California emissions model that calls for the overpriced cat of 284 dollars the cheapest i found. Was wondering if anyone knows if you could just cut that one out and weld in a universal one. All universal for this model say not for california emissions. Any help will be appreciated.

Magnaflow makes OBDII compliant aftermarket cats. Not sure about price or selection. But, they claim to be stricter than california emissions requirements.

So you have a 3.2L and the right side cat is no longer 'converting' as per the down stream O2 sensor that side. IMO, I'd swap out that O2 sensor first to see if the code doesnt come back. $284 for any bolt-up cat is an excellent price. (you have 2 on the 3.2L) If that cat is indeed not doing anything & you plan to keep the truck, you may as well replace the whole exhaust system from the manifolds back. Ripping into one side of the exhaust is hard (and costly) as it is.

I had the same problem a few months ago. I saw the cats that you are talking about. Not a bad price at all since the dealer wanted about $800 for a cat plus labor. I got mine off ebay, both cats and the "Y" pipe for $250. Great deal, but unlikely to happen again, it was a guy parting out a Passport. Look around though. I had the whole thing installed for $400. So, if you get the cat and have it installed i9t wont be too bvad, but not a bad idea to replace both cats and maybe more. If money is tight, just do the one cat for now.
