water in trunk

96 jetta trek, water lots of water in my trunk it fills the spare tire well. the thick pad in the trunk is soaked. where can it be comming from. The trunk lid seal looks good. There is no obvious holes in the body. Any suggestion?

This is just a shot, but I had a similar problem a couple years ago. I was rear ended and it didn't appear to have caused any damage. As it turned out, it cracked the sealant in several places and let water in.
A couple more likely possibilities would be:
Leakage around the back windshield
leaking around the weather stripping.
I usually place paper towels around the inside of the trunk and run a hose over it for a bit to try to find where the water is coming in.

I had this problem too and found the water was coming in behind the tail lights. I removed both tail light assembles and ran a bead of sealing caulk around the sealing surfaces. Nice and dry after that.
