Re: Hard drive partions
Yep, HP usually supplies either a restore/recovery disk or just uses the hidden partition to restore the PC to factory. They don't normally send out a Win XP CD with their machines, so don't feel shorted - that's quite common among pre-built machines like HP's.
If you nuke the hidden partition and don't have a recovery CD (or CD's), you're pretty much out of luck unless you install with an actual Win XP CD. It's not impossible, but can take some effort to get everything to work. It's better to use the restore/recovery CD's that came with your PC unless you have a good idea of what to do. I would try what Oz suggested first. Best of luck to you.

Re: Hard drive partions
To seriously reformat drive for fresh install,
get "KILLDISK", nuke the drive. Once drive is completely reformatted, install XP. It will ask you to create a partition. That's when you tell it to make just 1 partition. All should be gravy after that. -johann

I did find it and it is a 21gb PARTITION. And got it working. I had to reload windows XP on it. But never could delete the partition. It is hard to kill. Never could get the HP restore to go back on. I think partition magic is the way for me to go. Thanks for the reply MT

Re: Hard drive partions
If you have to buy the Partition Magic, check out killdisk first.
You might save yourself a couple of bucks. It is a free download from killdisk.com. The full version is good enough for Dept. of Defense use. I have used it twice with excellent results. Once to rescue a Hard drive that got its boot sector cracked by a virus. It's fairly easy and you can restore the HP image afterwards. Either way, Goodluck! -johann

Re: Hard drive partions
I want to thank everyone for there help on the hard drive partition.
I finaly figured out the main problem was the HP recovery disk I had was bad. Everytime I flormated down and would try to reload the the recovery disk it would go wild on adding extra partitions. I fianly got the XP windows disk loaded and all programs up and running good . Then the last thing I did I was loading a snap on tool Fast-trac program and the dam thing did not load right so I removed it and was going to reload and BANG. I blowed the hole dan thing. All I have is something about NTLDR . I think it says missing but not sure. I press ctrl-alt and it reboots and just pops up again. I had to switch back to my old hard drive to get computer to come on. After switching back to old hard drive I can still read and or copy stuff to the the new one. Is there an easy fix or a good safe way to fix it? Thanks MT
