Best Intake

hi again fellow jeep heads!

well i'm breaking down and getting an intake.
I was wondering is there a best or its all pretty much same? How does just running a K&N and pulling the silencer out do compared to one? The K&N is top of my list should i change my mind?

I have a 93 xj 4L auto.

I've been slowly saving for a 2000 intake mani too bah saving for retirment and paying for my race car takes all my jeep toy money away

Cheers,
Max

Re: Best Intake

Check out these two sites below for info on doing what you're thinking about. Aftermarket intake systems for the XJ are way expensive and IMHO not worth the money. This link is an excellent (read CHEAP) alternative to the high priced sytems. I made one of these for my XJ and it cost maybe $100 (the biggest cost was the K&N cone filter at $73). The big air flow bottle neck with the XJ intake is the hard 90+ deg turn the just before the throttle body. Unfortunately due to the high mount of the engine with respect to the hood, you're very limited.

Here's another site on reboring your throttle body...

And here's the Tech Sticky from another forum.... full of good stuff :-)

Re: Best Intake

Thanks for the help, I dont have an intake silencer on mine odd..

Well I just got a fram "air hog" installed took the dust out of the intake tubing.

I now sometimes while driving hard can chirp into 2nd gear *tires healthy* Not really much a gain but for some reason this 4L is hard runner.

Re: Best Intake

dude an intake is slang for intake manifold! you know, that part that your carb or throttle body ataches to? well thats the intake what your refering to is an aftermarket air cleaner and/or housing and duct. most people called a cold air induction. Which is a term that is being used far more loosely than it should since 99% of those kits pull hot air in directly from your engine compartment wich would simply make them low restriction air intake kits. What you want is a combination of both a low restriction air intake that pulls air from outside of the engine compartment where it is cooler and yet still manages to retain a low restriction. The best bang for your buck in my personal opinion for the average do-it-yourself joe is simply a factory replacement K&N filter that way you retain your actual factory air cleaner housing and duct work that draw form the grill or inner fender well where the air is cooler than the engine compartment and yet it is still considerably less restrictive than a paper filter
