For those who think you know Jeeps, Try to figure this out...

My Jeep has been sitting for the last 6 months because it just died suddenly... I wasn't getting spark or fuel. Today I had time to mess with it for a few hours and was troubleshooting everything. The coil was getting power but no spark when cranking. We could get the fuel pump to have power if we straight ran a wire from the pump to the battery.
Now for the fun part...
While checking for spark again, I had #1 spark plug wire unplugged and put a screwdriver in it and let it rest on the valve cover. While my friend tried to startthe car I could see sparks hitting the valve cover then all of a sudden 2 seconds later the Jeep was running. I put the wire back on the plug and the thing runs awesome! This has happened in the past and so I am not sure what could cause this to happen. For all you Jeep gurus out there try to figure this one out..

Check your CPS and the ground wire from the rear of the engine to the firewall.

Welcome to the forum!

I would have to agree with the CPS (Crankshaft Position Sensor) suggestion. I had the same symptoms last year on my 92 Cherokee (dying and different times, sometimes restart, sometimes not).

And making sure that you have good connections all around is always a good suggestion.

Let us know what you find.

Take Care,

I have actually already replaced the cps so I don't see how it could be that. And I have already regrounded the engine a number of times. So I am stuck

You didn't mention what year your Jeep is or what engine/transmission, etc.
You also didn't mention if there were any codes stored in it.

When mine failed, there was NO check engine light, but there was a code stored anyway. That is what directed me to the CPS.

Take Care,

Try the 3-key turn trick. Turn the key like this:

OFF-ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON (within about 5 seconds)

Then watch the check engine light. It should flash 2-digit numbers at you

For example:
FLASH PAUSE FLASH-FLASH = 12
(long pause)
FLASH-FLASH-FLASH-FLASH-FLASH PAUSE FLASH-FLASH-FLASH-FLASH-FLASH = 55

See what you get and post back here.

Take Care,
