91 Camry doesn't slow down

91 Camry 3SFE runs and drives but doesn't seem to slow down when you let off the throttle it just seems to cruise along at approximately the speed you were going. No apparent binding in the cables/linkage. I've done a real quick clean of the throttle body and it seemed to help a little. Possibly has a slightly higher than normal idle (haven't put a tach on it to verify yet). So far I haven't found any vacuum leaks. I plan to clean the throttle body again this weekend along with the iac valve and check on the EGR valve while I'm in there, anything else I should check while I'm in it up to my elbows?

Make sure you clean the backside of the throttle plate inside the throttle body. Also, clean the edges of the valve thoroughly. You will need to have someone hold the throttle to the floor with the engine off, so you can get to the backside. I like to use a soft toothbrush. It makes it easier to reach the backside of the throttle plate. Also, make sure you clean the throttle body thoroughly where the throttle valve touches it in it's normal rest (idle) position. Again, the soft toothbrush might help.

did it ever occured to you that it could be a spring? The one on the throttle body?

A year ago, i was driving my uncle's 2001 camaro, B4C police interceptor version for Florida Highway Patrol--bought at auction and converted to civilian, re-painted, etc.)

Anyway, i was on Turnpike and the throttle got stuck...i had to put that thing in Neutral, and let it roll to a stop. I thought about turning the motor off but then i thought that the brake booster won't work well) Bad move-i left the motor running and since the throttle was stuck at 6000rpm (I was being a jackalope and racing), i blew the head gasket. So, anyway, make sure the spring is good and busting out some WD-40 might help. Check to see that the throttle, when released, goes back to normal/close)

As usual the best laid plans went slightly astray. So far I have managed to clean the throttle body a second time paying special attention to the backside of the butterfly plate and the area where it sits at idle, this seems to have helped a tiny bit more. Have not managed to get to the IAC valve or the EGR valve. The throttle does go back to the closed position when released with no apparent binding. I have a parts car so will compare the two to see if there is a difference in operation. Thanks for the suggestion.

Yesterday the car started stuttering/missing, decided a tuneup was in order, cap and rotor were slightly corroded but not terrible, plugs looked ok but I discovered I had previously (17K miles ago) installed the dreaded Bosch plugs. Got everything changed and it once again runs like it should.
