I think I just killed my Jeep!

Hi Folks,
I have just completed 1500+kms in the past 24 hours in my 89 Cherokee 4.0 4x4 Laredo Auto. It also has 278,000kms and was running awesome. Now it is idling so rough that it will stall when I come to a stop. It is also leaking oil onto the exhaust pipe which creates smoke when I stop anywhere. It is now sitting outside looking miserable. Anyone got any ideas.
Much appreciated,
Quinny

Ouch, doesn't sound so good. Has it used any oil?

Re: I think I just killed my Jeep!

Hello Mr Jacksonsan,
Yes it has, only about 1 - 1 and a half litres. (Over 1500kms)
I have also just seen my pvc pipe is broken in half and the grommet is totally disintegrated.
Any thoughts sensai?

Re: I think I just killed my Jeep!

Well, the oil use is occurring somewhere.

When you say "PVC pipe" what pipe do you mean?

-edit- my first thought was maybe the head gasket...but there aren't any other symptoms other than what you listed, correct?

Re: I think I just killed my Jeep!

Correct, no other symptoms. The pipe I meen comes out of the Tappit (valve) cover on the top of the engine and goes to the air filter box. It has always leaked a little bit of oil but never onto the exhaust.

Re: I think I just killed my Jeep!

There are several posts about leaking oil here when that valve/system is clogged. Also, the vacuum leak that is occurring with the broken part is probably what's causing your roughness. Time for a replacement valve, and a good cleaning of the tube that leads to the airbox. I would probably replace the air filter as well.

Hopefully once you get that done (and fill back up with oil!) your Jeep should be back to normal.

Re: I think I just killed my Jeep!

where is the oil that is leaking onto your exhaust pipe coming from? Also, the part you are describing is your pcv valve, but we got the idea A lot of times when those breather tubes clog up, they build pressure in the engine and will blow an oil pan gasket or I have even seen them blow the rear main. I agree with Mr. Jackson, change the pcv valve, grommet, entire tube, and the air filter, then see if you are still leaking oil, then we can talk about what may be needed next.

Re: I think I just killed my Jeep!

I just took it to the shop. My year of Jeep does not have a PCV valve, according to the manufacturer and parts stores. I did manage to get a whole new grommet, hose etc and have fitted it. I cleaned my ccv valve etc and it is idling rough between 300 and 600 rpm and every 10 secs it nearly stalls. I am still getting oil coming from what seems to be the rear of the block.

Re: I think I just killed my Jeep!

Hi Mr Jacksonsan,
Good news is that I went to the wreckers and found a ERG Solenoid for $5 Canadian. I put it on and wham....runs like a charm again. I will now work on the oil leak. I am quite certain its coming from the rear seal and I saw a post you made to someone else suggesting auto-?? a product that may help the seals and clean you engine. Is that product in stores or just on the internet?
Thanks for your time Sensai,
Quinny

www.auto-rx.com

It's available by internet only at this time, I don't think he's marketed it in stores yet. I got mine within 3-4 days of ordering.

You can read a lot about oil, lubrication and many posts about Auto-rx (ARX) here:
