'96 Grand Am - question about ETS and gear selector

Hello. I have a 1996 Grand Am SE, 2.4L. I have a couple of questions related to the gear selecter in the center console and the ETS system.

When I bought the car a few months ago, the "ETS OFF" light was always on. After getting the rear brakes fixed a few weeks ago, the "ETS OFF" light went off. Over the last week or so, I have been noticing the "ETS OFF" light coming on at random times while driving. I then discovered that when the "ETS OFF" light is on while I'm driving, if I apply pressure on the gear selector (without pressing the button on the stick) to pull it back a little bit, the "ETS OFF" light will go off. If I let off the pressure on the gear selector, it moves back to its normal position and the light goes back on. Anyone know why this is?

Is there any way to test the ETS system to make sure it is working when the ETS OFF light is off? Perhaps the ETS isn't working at all, but the light is malfunctioning?

I've also noticed that it feels like I can pull the gear selector back into the next gear without pressing the button in. I haven't actually tried to pull it all the way into the next gear, but I've pulled it far enough that it feels like it would let me pull it all the way. This isn't normal, is it? Is it something I should be worried about?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!!!

Re: '96 Grand Am - question about ETS and gear selector

If the ETS light off is coming on. Thats a pretty good test right there that its not working. There must be a problem with wiring or sensors located at the rear brakes or front hub assembly.

Ok, so then why does the light go off when I pull my gear selector back a fraction of an inch? I can't imagine moving the gear selector that tiny bit is changing anything by the rear brakes or front hub assembly.

The car also uses its VSS (vehicle speed sensor). Which is part of the tranny to monitor how fast the car is going in relation to how fast the tranny is spinning the wheels. Maybe your linkage is in need of adjustment.
