96 accent.. sloppy stickshift and steering?

Hi, just bought a 96 accent for my kid. The steering wheel seems real sloppy and so does the stickshift. Is this typical for this car or is there any way to tighten up either of these? Thanks for any input.

I mean that there is alot of play in the wheel. you can turn it maybe 1/8 turn before it turns the wheels. Don't know how else to describe it. I know some cars aren't real tight, but i have never seen one like this before. I just wondered if there was an adjustment or something we could do. As far as shifting, the lever just seems to be real loose or free. Maybe that is typical for the car also. Ity has 129,000 miles on it-I just figured some parts were worn or needing adjustments.

I always thought that loose stick is good thing as you do not have to force things around. As far as steering you probably need an aligment if your wheel is off.

Re: 96 accent.. sloppy stickshift and steering?

as far as the stick shift is concerned, it is not a problem. i drove a 1994 Ford Probe before i got my accent and it had the sloppiest stickshift i have ever felt. every gear felt like nuetral and nuetral was ridiculous. but it never gave me a lick of trouble so i dont think its a big deal. it kinda made it easier to drive cuz it was still real smoothe. and for the steering wheel problems, i would almost want to leave it. i dont know about everyone elses accent but mine has massive oversteer. i have learned to drive it like that but it is tricky. a loose steering wheel will help with that, lol. my main question for you is how does it drive with the stickshift and the steering wheel? is it a really big problem? i agree with the previous post as well. if it is a problem, an alignment should help you out with the steering wheel. And maybe new linkages in the shifter will tighten it up too?
