"SECURITY LIGHT STAYS ON, CAR WON'T START
HELP.... My 1996 Chevy camaro has a problem 2 weeks and counting. When the "security light" stays on the car won't start. I have had to unhook the battery and hook it back up, after several attempts, the light will stay off and it will start. What can I do to fix this or by pass this.

Re: "SECURITY LIGHT STAYS ON, CAR WON'T START
It is your VATS security system, the key you are using no longer looks right to system either the key is bad or the system checking it is going bad.

As stated key or system bad. If you have a good spare key try it.
Go easy on them battery unhooks that may be harmfull to your system. Usually better to fix it than bypass it. Also get it on a scanner and check for body pcm codes. The codes may point to the problem. If you get any codes post back code no. MT

Re: "SECURITY LIGHT STAYS ON, CAR WON'T START
Yeh, I've had this same problem real intermittently with my 93 Z. The problem is as stated above, but one of the reasons for this problem is that the little chip on your key acts as a resistor with a set value. When you go to start your car, the resistor value will be measured and if it doesn't register the correct value, the Security light will come on. At that point, you will have to wait 4 minutes (I believe) for the light to turn off before you can attempt to start your car again.
I actually had my car towed the first time and got a new battery, since it wouldn't turn over or anything. Since then, I've found out about the resistor value and that one of the most common reasons for it occuring is that there is a piece of lint or something or other over the chip when you insert it into the ignition. When the problem occurs, take the key out, make sure there is nothing on the chip, and then also blow out the ignition as best as you can. A compressed air can should work well, though I've never had to go that far. It's definitely worth a shot, but as stated above, I wouldn't be disconnecting the battery cable every time there's a problem. Just wait out the 4 minutes, take the steps listed above, and then try again. |
