90/91 wiring into 88/89

I'm helping a local guy with a 89 STD hatch, we are going to wire up my tach cluster using a pin-out chart I made years ago, how about his engine wiring? His is a DPFI as well, in theory I should just be able to drop my D15 in and plug it in using my harness but do I need to pull mine off and use his? also are all of the sensors the same?

Re: 90/91 wiring into 88/89

if your going to run it dpfi it will all be the same...even if you run it mpfi...i used the stock harness and made it mpfi... what are you trying to do?... if its a cluster swap and you have a pin out it should work...maybe im just too tired to fully understand your question......90/91 dont work with 88/89...(for the cluster)

Re: 90/91 wiring into 88/89

it does if you re-wire the plugs and get the appropriate bezel

really, I'm trying to avoid completely re-wiring the whole car. I've done it before and it's not fun.

Re: 90/91 wiring into 88/89

I second the "rewire blows" comment. Pins on the 88-89 and 90-91 are different..and I dont just think it is in the cluster either, I have an engine harness from an 88 HF and an interior harness from a 91 SI (dunno if that has anything to do with it) and when matched together..almost none of the wires matched.

harnesses between different years aren't the same at all. Not even the engine harnesses. I've seen a few times where I've tried using a 91 dx harness in a 89 dx or an 88 dx and it obviously plugs in, but some of the wires are in different locations on both sides of the plug, so you have to depin and repin them to the same locations for it to work properly.

Re: 90/91 wiring into 88/89

I don't know about the engine harness, but the cluster will work if you rewire it. Don't know if you can just repin it or not, I just used the 88-89 plugs. I don't think the 88-89 bezel will work though, I believe the 88-89's bolt in different places, don't remember for sure, been several years since I did mine.
