|
Timing belt--Where to buy, what do I need?
Any suggestions on where to buy parts? I have done some searching and found prices vary. I may need to replace the belt, tensioners and water pump on a 2001 Rodeo V-6, and want to be sure to get everything I need and that it's decent quality. I hav seen both remanufactured water pumps as well as new, anyone with experience with these?
(FWIW: It appears this engine dropped the timing belt due to water pump failure. I understand this not an interference engine, so will assume no other damage was done. Is this right?) Thanks Last edited by Rmasters3; 05-03-2006 at 12:43 PM.

What Year is it? If you did not hear any loud crunching/knocking it probably is a non-interference engine... Many claim my rodeo is a non-interference engine (95) I disagree with that because I heard loud crunching and I think my valves are bent. They say the rodeo became non-interference in 1998.
I bought my belts from different sources over the years, napa, pep boys, etc. My pep boys pump went over 100k without a problem. I felt better with the gates belt under the hood. The last belt was from NAPA and that failed, well, it slipped and I am not sure it was the belt that caused it.....

Redbug - have you opened your truck yet to see what damage has been done, if any??
FWIW - my waterpump went on my '97 Rodeo, causing the belt to jump a tooth, sounded godoffal terrible, but no damage was done. I put on all brandnew parts, I would not choose to do a reman waterpump. My list consisted of: waterpump, timing belt tensioner, belt, idler pulleys, crankshaft & camshaft seals.

Call Merlin at St. Charles Isuzu if you have the time to wait for parts. He will tell you all that you need and ship that day if you call in the AM. (636)441-4481.
When I did all of that stuff on my '97, I got all the parts at Advance, but the tensioner was not included in the timing belt kit, so I ordered that separately from St. Charles.

Ok, I will have another look.... Maybe I will align belt again and do a compression check...
I could see where no damage would happen if I only slipped one tooth on the belt.... I really believe the valves are bent... I first heard a loud tapping noise and then I lost power and compression on at least one cylinder. It sounded like I had a valve stuck open. Simlilar to a compression release sound I used to get on my Honda 500 motorcycle. Then when the belt slipped again it stopped dead. Crunch, crunch, crunch...
