97 accord is blowing hot air. Help! Freon didnt work.

My honda accord 1997 4cyl is blowing hot air from the air conditioner. I bought the freon stuff with the gauge and it said that it was dangerously high so I didn't add any. I checked the fuses and antifreeze and they were all good. If you know an easy way of finding out whats wrong let me know what to do.

How dangerously high?

Pressure around 90 psi (3 times normal running pressure) is not unusual if the compressor isn't running. The normal value is only for when it is engaged and pumping. When you first start to shoot refrigerant in, it will shoot up real high, then come down as the compressor starts up and the system equalizes.

You can lower the pressure quite a bit and get the charge into it faster by running cold water from a hose over the condensor while charging.

So the question is:

Is the compressor running at all? If so, what kinda low side pressure do you get?

If the low pressure side is normal to low, but the high side is overpressurized, you have a blockage somewhere.

You ideally want the compressor to run whenever you are charging. Sometimes you have to bypass the low pressure cutoff switch to get this to happen. Otherwise it may not start up until the first can makes it's way into the system, and that can take some time...

Re: 97 accord is blowing hot air. Help! Freon didnt work.

The heater control cable on my '95 doesn't shut the valve all the way. This results in warm air blowing out even if I have the AC on. The solution I found is to pop the hood and close the valve with my hand. It will stay shut until I open it again. It may be as simple as that on your car.

I had this happen to mine as well. Cost like $300 to get it fixed.

Re: 97 accord is blowing hot air. Help! Freon didnt work.

If the position of the contol is completelly in full cold, and if you pop the hood and verify that the valve is completelly close, then there shouldn't be hot air into the system, also you can check if the refrigerant pressure goes donw, if it does, then you have a leakage within the system.
but even if you have it there should be some cold air anyway until the pressure goes completelly down.
