disappearing oil
well, I have a strange case of disappearing oil... The dealership filled her up to 5 qts about 2400 miles ago. My oil light recently came on and after checking levels, she was running near empty!! I checked for any under body leaks, none found, no puddles/stains under my car where I park every night, and I'm not burning oil externally due to no smoke. I filled up 4 qts and she ran well but about 700 miles in, she's rattling again. I checked the oil level and she's near empty again!! I had the dealership check for a leak and they didn't find one and there's no oil spilling on any engine components. A few days ago I put another 3 qts in but the dipstick still shows low. Any ideas of what's happening???
Thanks, ROKnight

Re: disappearing oil
Take a look at the spark plugs and see if they are black and sooty. Look at the PCV system, it may be sucking the oil into the combustion chambers. How's the coolant level? Does it look like there is an excessive amount of oil in the cooling system? Check the oil level when you park and when you go to start up. Maybe someone is helping themselves by draining it out of your motor.

Re: disappearing oil
5 Quarts?
Also check the filter. verify that there is a gasket, and only one gasket between the filter and block |

Re: disappearing oil
switch to a 10W-30 for the summer. I'll bet it's burning it. Check oil every week.

Re: disappearing oil
i've noticed the geo prisms are having similar oil-burning symptoms (mebbe cause they share the same type of engines???)
check pcv valve 1st... then v-stem seals finally leakdown test for checking piston rings... |

Re: disappearing oil
are you making sure you're checking the oil level when the car is cold? let it sit for a couple hours, then check.
10w-40 wouldn't hurt either

Re: disappearing oil
lol, I have 10w-40 in it now.. it runs beautifully with that type. I am checking the oil when it's cold too. I think I might take it back to the dealer to find what's going on. Free inspection
