toyota camry 1999 model

The check engine light (MIL) is lit on my car..so i took the car to an private mechanic. He took 80$ and finally came up with the fact that the evaporator canister/VSV assembly needs to be replaced and is asking about $700-$800.Is it really worth doing it through a non-dealer or is it good to go to a dealer.what is the reason for this to happen.

I would advise to check it with the dealers first before spending money on a private mechanic. Some mechanics will charge too high for a cheap fix. Go to the dealer and see what the problem is, how much they'll repair it for and what parts needs to be replaced.

And before you get it fixed at all --- that code can be caused by overfilling the gas tank (I'm told) or leaving the car idling for too long (I've experienced that).

Try driving it for a few days. You may find that, like mine, the trouble may clear itself.

No, with a problem like this, you don't want to risk creating more problems for the car. Go check it out with the dealers as soon as you can. Even if it's a computer error or miniscule problem, you don't want to shrug this off, especially if it's a engine problem.

Re: toyota camry 1999 model

Before you let a dealer charge you big bucks for a new canister come back here. Unless your car is under warranty or you're getting a recall fixed there is no need to take your car to a dealership for maintenance. For some parts yes but, never for maintenance!!!! Never!!!
