Got the car of my dreams.. now a few questions

Well, I decided against getting my dads '94 camaro and went with a white '88 IROC-Z 5.7l. Drove 100 miles out to get it and figured if it ran good on the 100 miles back then it's a keeper. The car is in almost absolutely perfect condition, it's sat in a barn for most of its life (concrete floor though so not much rust, hasn't been sitting in grass) there still is a bit of rust but that's understandable, the car is 17 years old. I know I need to get it out to a mechanic ASAP to get it checked out and possibly tuned up, the car only has just over 90,000 miles and it has only been driven one month out of the year for the past ten years (and in the past ten years only 3,000 miles were put on, checked all the service records.) I need to get a carfax though, the woman said she was the original owner, can't really afford one after spending most of the money i've saved up in a couple months on this thing and after the fact i'm going to get a few things fixed. If anyone has a subscription and wants to get me one the VIN is 1G1FP2185JL157165 and my email is [email protected]. Onto the more important things though...

I know this may be a little vague but I have a few questions with some noises/clicks I have heard on my 100 mile drive back. Even though I had the t-tops off I noticed a pinion nose in the rear of the car, the exhaust pipes are new and only 2 years old so I figured maybe those were loose or not put on right or something. Also, the car makes a grinding noise in the rear left of the car when going in reverse and also when turning sometimes. It's been sitting for three years so I figure maybe the brakes are either bad or maybe the CV joints? This is only my second car so I don't really know much, but I have my fathers old service manual so I can look it up if I can get a better idea. Also when I'm coming to a complete stop there is a clink/clunk sound that happens 75% of the time underneath the car, usually happens once when you're almost completely stopped and then again when you come to a complete stop. Once you take off again and the car shifts into gear there's another loud clink, transmission I suppose?

Sorry for the large post, alot of questions. The help is appreciated in advance.

Congrats and welcome. Sounds like a rear issue or a bad U-joint.

Re: Got the car of my dreams.. now a few questions

ok the clunkin when slowing down and stuff might be a broken transmission mount. my old camaro did that and i couldnt figure it out and found out my tranny mount was broken in half, replaced it and no more clunking. so i would check that, you can get a crobar and stick it betewwn the tranny and crossmember and see if you can lift the tail of the trans off the mount, if you can that might be your clunkin.

I can't believe I forgot about tranny mounts but I concur very likely cause as the original equipment ones and those type are known to fall apart after being subjected to the undercar fluids and debri

Re: Got the car of my dreams.. now a few questions

Actually.. I think it stopped, I drove it half the day today and it didin't clunk at all. I figure the car just had to whip itself into shape after not going much anywhere in a few years. My big mistake will probably be making this my daily driver but hey I'm only 18 gotta enjoy life while I can afford it and live with my parents. Like hell I'm going to go out and rag this thing out though, I'm kinda afraid to punch it and tear it up. I need to find a peice for the car though, the drivers side of the car in the rear it has a chip on the peice that's supposed to pass for the corner of the rear spoiler. The seller (a woman owned the car.. maybe it's not that ragged out) found a peice at the junkyard but it's too small, perhaps anyone knows a site where I can order one?

I have most of the service records and the car got an estimate and Midas said it needed brakes, belts, struts and shocks. It's probably going to cost me up to $1,000 to get this car in tip top shape. How much does a tune up usually run on a TPI?

If you wanna see pictures I just put it on cardomain today: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2326130

Re: Got the car of my dreams.. now a few questions

you can do all that stuff yourself..its will be a good learning experience...thats how youll learn your car better and how to work on cars...and thats a very nice looking car...its in great looking shape and the interior looks good too...all that stuff you need done will probably only cost a few hundred bucks if you do it yourself..

Re: Got the car of my dreams.. now a few questions

I see on your cardomain you live in melbourne. Just to let you know, there is a Camaro meet in the works for sometime in June, I believe, also its going to be in Orlando.

There are a lot of us camaro driving AF members in Florida so we decided to get together for a meet. You should check it out. Theres a thread on here somewhere do a search for it. (I say us even though I wasn't really involved with the planning.)
