Bearing Help On '97 Grand Prix
I am having a bearing noise from my right wheel which sounds like a bad wheel bearing. My father-in-law who is a retired mechanic looked at it and he thinks the problem might be an outer bearing on the transaxle where the halfshaft comes in.He says the shaft feels loose up there.Would a bad outer bearing on the transaxle sound the same as a bad wheel bearing?Has anyone replaced this bearing and how would you do it? Any thoughts? Thanks

Re: Bearing Help On '97 Grand Prix
I don't think there is a bearing there. The right CV shaft connects directly to the differential inside the transmission. If it's a wheel bearing, it will usually get quieter or louder depending on which way the wheel is turned going straight down the highway. It could also be an inner CV bearing going out. Does the car shimmy side to side when you accelerate hard?

Re: Bearing Help On '97 Grand Prix
The Loud Humming Noise From The Right Wheel Does Get Quieter If You Move The Wheel Slightly To The Right.the Noise Is Not Affecting The Way The Car Drives Or Handles Yet.

Re: Bearing Help On '97 Grand Prix
just DO NOT get cheap wheel hubs, you gonna regret it...especially those from autozone or advance in white boxes DYNAPAK I think. I did fine with BCA and they are about $150 each... unless you want to go with OEM

The BCA - Federal Mogul are good Hub/Bearings. IMO better than AC Delco.

Re: Bearing Help On '97 Grand Prix
There is a bushig in the extension housing of the trans where the CV axle goes in that can get worn and cause a sloppy fit and noise. Your problem sounds more like a bad hub than a transaxle bushing to me though.
