91 civic lx starting problem
I have a 1991 civic lx 5spd, stock. I recently tried to start the car and all of the electrical systems seemed to work (radio, dummy lights, seat belt, etc.), but the engine would not turn over. It sounded like it would for maybe 1/2 sec, then nothing. I went to AutoZone and they told me that I had a bad cell in the batt. I replaced the batt. and still had the same problem exactly.
My brother thinks that it might be the starter, I thought that it might be the alternator. Any suggestions? Any idea on how much the repairs might be?Thanks, Joe |

Re: 91 civic lx starting problem
Thank you for the response. Any idea on how much a new starter would run, installed?

Re: 91 civic lx starting problem
no clue with installed... i've NEVER had anything installed on my car, did it all myself. If you can, DO IT YOURSELF! its lke 2 bolts to take it off, and like 2 clips.... thats it. BUT if you dont have the tools, see if someone you know will do it and give them 15 bucks to do it. OR you could take it to a shop, but im pretty sure its more than $150. ?? your choice... you could always call a shop locally and just ask them what it would cost

Re: 91 civic lx starting problem
Alternator has nothing to do with starting your engine, but I wouldn't jump to the gun and say it's the starter or there might be a chance you will be wasting money on another un-necessary part (like the battery you just replaced).
I don't know how much knowledge do you have in automotive technology, but if you can, check the connection from the battery to the starter's "B" terminal. It sounds most likely it's the starter to me, but if you are taking it to the shop, you should have those guys check it out and make sure what the problem is.
