Re: question with problem on 94 GC
anyone with any info?
this morning when i reverse (my driveway is a tad slope) and when i reverse out of it and then put it in drive it sometimes stalls if i dont give it gas, and when i do give it gas it will shutter a tad. i changed the spark plugs a bout 1,500 miles ago, and i changed the wires along with it, i think thats all i need for a tune up. you think anything else could be the problem? Thanks! |

I have a 1994 GJC Laredo and when I bought it used I had the same problem. The RPMs seemed low and when I would take my foot off the gas at corners or stoplights it would stall. It would fire right back up but stall again once in a while again. It was at lights, corners or reverse/forward shifts. The computer monitors the engine so I thought I could not adjust the idle screw for this problem. I looked and it seemed like there was no adjustment. Then a friend told me about the throttle body adjustment. There is a small metal plug where the adjustment screw is at on the throttlebody. I popped it out using a small screwdriver and adjusted the idle up to 650 RPMs. Also I cleaned the throttlebody throat due to a very dirty condition. This also helped a bunch. I have never had the stall problem again. Hope this helped you.......Try cleaning the throttlebody first before adjusting the idle. To check the dirty condition of the body just wipe your finger in the throat while off and under the flap on the body. If black then very dirty. I used a carb cleaner with a soft toothbrush to clean. Then when I started it back up latter the carb cleaner sent a lot of smoke out the tail pipe until it burned off. If it idles rough then it is dirty. Just be careful not to drop anything in the throat while cleaning. Hope this helps..........

Re: question with problem on 94 GC
Hey thanks, two days ago i only cleaned the top of the flap and the top flap itself. with a product called intake cleaner and throttle cleaner, so this week i will get the rest of the stuff under the flap, is that where the computer section is? under the flap? it was black alright under the flap, so was the top half, until i cleaned that nice
so my question is should i use carb cleaner or the stuff i was using and also my question above too. thanks! and usually how long will it take to clean the section under the flap? and how much carb cleaner should i use? |

Re: question with problem on 94 GC
I think what you have is probably as good as anything to clean with, as to how much.... it's like toilet paper. Use as much as neccessary.
The "computer section" isn't on the throttle body. There is a part on the throttle body called the Idle Air Control (IAC) that is controlled by the computer and you'll see ton's of posts about cleaning it. In many instances a sticky or dirty IAC is the cause of your idle trouble. Hopefully what you do will clean it up, otherwise read carefully the posts about pulling it and cleaning it. And when you did plugs and wires I would have done cap and rotor too.

Re: question with problem on 94 GC
I have a 94 GC V-8 5.2 litre. It just started doing this, when I accelerate from a dead stop the engine hesitates and sputters, the harder I press the peddle from a dead stop the more it hesitates and will even stall out. The start up is intermittent, sometimes it will start right up , others it will take an extra second or two. The idle seems fine except for a few faint sputters in the engine. I took it today to get the oil changed and opted for the engine flush and fuel injector service. I watched the technician pour the injector cleaner in and take a suction hose off of the engine to suck in the other part of the cleaner and the whole "kit n kaboodle". After the oil change, air filter, injector service, and engine flush, it still eventually hesitates. I went and bought a new fuel filter and put that in, same thing. I did notice the PCV valve seemed like it was sticking and some of the bleeder and suction hoses were brittle , so I replaced the valve and hose, put a water/gas treatment in the tank and filled her up. At this point, it is still hesitating ( not as much) and I am out of idea. ANY help what so ever would be greatly appreciated.

Re: question with problem on 94 GC
You may want to try replacing the ignition coil. It can cause hesitation and bad idle. It's only $30 at Auto Zone and worth a try.

Re: question with problem on 94 GC
I'll check it , but about 5 months ago I broke down on the side of the road and ended up replacing the ignition coil, cap, the pick-up coil and the rotor. When I rev the engine from under the hood it's almost as if the engine is being starved of air, but the air filter is brand new , there seem to be no restrictions in the air flow, and the throttle body has had cleaner sprayed into it as well. Thank you for replying!

Thank you for replying! Where I stand now , is , I have and gas/water treatment in the tank , filled it with high test ( which I always use) and am trying to drive out what I think may have been some bad gas in the tank. My next step will be to locate a reputable mechanic and have it proffesionally diagnosed. I'll post the results for future reference
