transmission fluid and hard shifting

Does anyone know what type of transmission fluid goes into a 98 cavalier with a 5 speed. Also i am having problems with it not shifting smooth. Kinda grinds into 2nd 3rd and 4th. If you pause for a half second between gears it shifts ok. if its not the oil the syncros are probably worn it has 180000km on it. Has anyone had any problems with leaks from the rear mail seal?

98 cav 2.2

Thankx
Mike

A quick and easy way to check if the synchros are worn is to check the fluid for little golden colored flakes.

Re: transmission fluid and hard shifting

yes i have had a problem with the rear main seal on my 96. i shot the tranny out i learned how to drive a stick at this cars expense. i went thru a clutch then a tranny. when i had the tranny out i went ahead and replaced the rear main seal while it was accessable. wasnt hard at all. i used to grind in 2nd but the tranny went befor i got chance to fix syncros.
