Tires

Im thinking about getting a set of 17" rims for my 2002 sunfire, but my question is....how big of a tire can i go 205/40/17 ? or 225/40/17 ?

also, what about 18" rims? i dont want any rubbing nor do any modification to prevent rubbing.

Thanks!

Re: Tires

You are good up to a 18"-19" rim.

I have 17's on mine. And both of those sizes look about right. Just remember that if you change tire sizes, you spedo is gonna be off a little.

One thing you might also want to look into is either a coil-over kit or some lowering springs. Becuase the thing looks like a 4X4 with different rims. Really a large wheel gap. Heck, even on stock wheels lowering the car helps with the look and the feel.

What rims are you looking at?

Re: Tires

Nice choice for the rims, but i was wondering... if i put 18" rims... how low can u go with the stock struts? Can you go wider than 225 or thats the max?
tnx

Re: Tires

If you don't lower the car, you can go forever on the stock stuts, its not until you lower the car that you start to run into problems.

The only thing I would do on stock struts is lowering springs, and even then, I would only use them until I would put in struts more capable of taking the stress, becuase the extra stress on the stock strut could cause it to blow.

KYB has some pretty diecent shocks for use with lowering springs, but you don't want to use a coil-over kit with them.

If you're gonna use a coil-over kit, then some of the best struts to use would be Koni. The Koni Red's and Yellow's are all in all a good strut to use. Koni Red's/Yellow's with Ground Control Coil-overs are a really common combination that a lot of J owners like.

Otherwise Tein makes a similar kit that has the strut and the coil-over all in one package.

NoisemakeR: You wouldn't want to go any wider than 225 for a 17"-18" tire.

Re: Tires

thanks for the reply. i want to lower it but i dont have the money for new rims, tires, springs and shocks... so i dont know... Is 2" drop good enough for 18" rims with 225/40/18 tires? Will the stock shocks last for like... 3-4 months with 2" drop springs? What do u think?
Thanks again.

Re: Tires

Non: I don't know, to tell you the truth. I've heard a lot of people say that they are junk, and others like them a lot. I, personally, would go with a company that I know that specializes in suspension. It's gonna cost you a bit more, but I know that the products are really high quality.

Noise: Yeah, even a 1" or a 1 1/2" drop adds to the look and feel of the car. But if you don't have enough cash right now for everything (I know the feeling) then just save it up. Buy the rims and tires now, and save up for some shocks/springs later. No one says you have to buy it all at once .

And in general, just be wary about your purchases. Research a lot, and don't be afraid to ask questions. A good place to go otherwise is www.j-body.org

They have a lot of really good people on there, and they have way more information that I could ever give you. Auctually, some of the stuff I riped off the .org, and no offense to any of the he hard core AFers, but this place isn't all that great for trying to learn anything.

Hope that helped.
