98 Cutlass--Original Fuel Filter Removal?
Hello, I have a 98 Cutlass with 157k. The original Delco fuel filter GF627 is still on this thing. I am trying to remove it. Problem is that the replacement fiters (Fram, STP, Autozone, and ACDelco) have a different clip assembly than the original (I think). I was going to replace the filter so I disconected the nut side and tried to sqeeze the black plactic clips on the other side. The clips cracked so I tried a pair of pliers, ended up with all of the plastic part removed. Now I cant get the filter off. What should I do?
I can see up inside the fuel line fitting and can see four metal spring clips. Does anyone know if these are part of the filter or part of the fuel line. I ask because a new fuel pump assembly of which this line is part costs around $520. I just wanted to replace my wifes fuel pump. HELP! Thanks in advance. |

Re: 98 Cutlass--Original Fuel Filter Removal?
I did the same thing you did and what a hassle and mess. Laying under a fuel filter can leave a bad taste in your mouth.
I eventually pried the old filter off and that was my only choice at the time. I believe the fuel pump is in the gas tank and the metal clip that you reference is part of the filter. This was a couple of years ago and I think I used a screw driver to bend the opening get it off the fuel line. This is not advised. I have since purchased a Lisle AC/Fuel Line Disconnect Tool Set. I got these from my local Sears. They work very efficiently as you just clip the correct sized disconnect tool from the set on the fuel line and slide it toward the filter and the it releases the filter from the fuel line. Simple and effective. Also I found the malibu section of http://www.automotiveforums.com better suited for mine/your 1998 cutlass. |
