1983 2+2 280zx
over a 3 month period or so my handbrake had slowly been degrading. Why? i have no idea. To cut a long story short, i just got the car back from the mechanic who has told me that itll cost between 500-700 to have it fixed. He said theres a cylinder inside either brake that needs to be machined since the threads are stripped. Can someone explain this to me? im failing to understand how a screw-like device can be rethreaded whilst maintaining its dimension around the circumference of the cylinder? Im looking through the victoria british magazine & manual to find this part, i have no idea what its called though.. (the mech wasnt sure of the correct name either) Advice anyone? -Tez Sydney, Australia |

Sounds like the rear caliper on my 240SX. The piston that pushes against the brake pad normally just pushes straight out when you are using your brakes. When you pull the emergency brake it rotates outward using those threads you mentioned and pushes against the brake pad, keeping the car in place. If the threads were/are stripped then yeah, that would cause it.
The problem I had was the piston would rotate too far out, past the threads, and it wouldn't be able to retract. The piston jammed against the pad which jammed against the rotor and wore that down until it was about half as thick as it should have been. So I had to pay $150 for a rebuilt caliper and rotor. I too fail to see how he's going to rethread the piston and the bore without making the former too small and the latter too large. Look around and see how much a rebuilt rear caliper costs, probably cheaper.
