I have a 2000 Montero Sport its a 3.0L engine. We had to replace the battery, after we put in the new one it started acting up. The alarm doesn't work anymore, when I try the remote to turn it on the thing doesn't turn on or off, its like its dead. and because its connected to the power locks they don't work either. The horn doesn't work, which is also a part of the alarm and the inside lights aren't working either. The panel ones are but the other ones don't, (like the reading lights and inside ceiling light). AND now when we drive it, the transmission is off. The car reads that it is in between Neutral and Drive, it keeps highlighting both of them. and it only goes to 2nd gear. What could have happened? all we did was change the battery? Could someone PLEASE give me some input? and the switch to where you put the diagnostic machine is not reading anything, its like its dead/burnt out. I took it to the Dealership and they were going to charge me 80 bucks just to look at it...I said forget it! I took it to another mechanic and she said that the relay..the one by the battery might need to be replaced and the transmission sensor might need to be replaced. I don't know what do you think? Please help!

Re: NEW BATTERY destroyed my Montero! HELP!
Disconnect the battery and try it again. Also, make sure to have the proper leads hooked up to where they need to go.

I have a '98 Montero Sport and I once changed the battery too and the car would cut off when I came to a stop (it wouldn't idle) and the radio wouldn't work right, etc, etc. Seems that you have to keep power to it when you change the battery. You can't completely lose power for it messes up the computer. Try that again and see. I ended up having to take it to a mechanic who could reset the computer. Needless to say, I haven't completely disconnected power again.

Fixed It!!!!
Hey thanks for you input ya'll! I took it to a mechanic and she said it was something very simple; a fuse blew when we switched the battery, I'm not sure exactly which one it was..all I know that its found under the hood and it can't be taken off just by pulling it off....its attached to a wire that goes to the battery....the wires are connected with a screw. So anyway...that fixed it!!!!!!!!!!
thanks again! |

Re: NEW BATTERY destroyed my Montero! HELP!
Yeah I had the same problem when i changed my alternator...I have a 99 montero sport lx ... there is a fuse box under the hood next to the battery..when you open it it there's a 100 amp fuse (blue) that my mechanic said controlled about 80% of the electrical systems. It was blown. He unscrewed it on both sides, slid it out, replaced it, and my car was fine...seems this happens if you replace the battery or the alternator. I printed this email and gave it to my mechanic and he went right to the problem...This happened to me before when I replaced the alternator and I took it to the dealership...needless to say they put it on the computer which gave a false reading of a spark plug not firing...they acted like they didn't have a clue.
PS I left the positive cable connected to the battery and only disconnected the negative but the fuse still blew. |
