97 lumi 3.1 DUMB QUESTION....Real Dumb...

Workin on the front brakes(as stated in an earlier post)... my confusion(and stupidity lies here) the haynes manual sez nothing about an ALAN wrench in replacing the rotors and pads yet It seems they have to come out to replace the rotors.... so do I pull those 1st then the caliper mount brackets or??? Believe me stupidity is sometimes painful for the stupid....LOL thnx in advance!!!......

p.s. and while Im at it... do I need to bleed em afterwards considering Im not replacing the calipers or just top off the fluid to correct level and test the pedal before I hit the road.....

no bleeding, you may need to pull the allen wrench bolts, which can be a bitch, soooo tight. Just get a foot long cheater bar on them. but you may not need to pull the bridge bolts. as i said, no bleeding needed, but be careful when pushing fluid back in with the c clamp, it can really fuck up the abs, and open the resivior and try to take out any extra fluid. ideally you should open the bleeders and push the excess fluid out that way but that probably would require bleeding, and they can be rusted, and if one breaks off, there goes the caliper.

NOT ALLEN, 60 TORX, DO NOT USE AN ALLEN!

Like Max said, DO NOT USE AN ALLEN!!!! It is a t-60 torx head to remove the bracket. The use of an allen will ruin the head of the bolt, and you will not be able to get them out. Use a little heat to loosen the factory threadlocker on the threads and it will come out much easier.. If you're replacing rotors, the bracket has to come off. As long as you are careful pushing the piston back, and close the bleeder before removing the c-clamp so air can't get in, you shouldn't have to bleed the system.

dudes i just recently changed the calipers on my 94. you do not use a TORX OR ALLEN wrench. its unecessary for their removal.search for another bolt because i went through 2 torx sockets and twisted another all to hell. I REPEAT THERE IS ANOTHER BOLT THAT YOU TAKE OFF TO REMOVE THE CALIPER!!!! its just a regular bolt that comes off alot easier. my old man thought it was the torx bolt too but after breaking too wrenches and me insisting that a different bolt took it off we tried another. try looking at the layout of the caliper and whats its attached too. if you cant find it get a kid who knows nothing about cars to see if he figure out the disassembly.if i remember correctly the bolt im talking is about 2 to 3 inches away from the torx bolt. and its not a stupid question because i haven't seen a post that explains this correct way too take it off. it alot easier this way and does less damage to the caliper.

So you found out the info discussed for a 97 is different than the 94, very observant!

The torx does need to come off if you are replacing the rotors as the original poster had said.
