Thumbs up Re: Watch out Skylines. Here comes the Mustang GT-R

Truly great scratchbuilding work! I think this whole thread could practically go in the "how to depository" lol Like ive always said and done- If there is no part or kit of what you want, just make it.
I use a similar method to your wing construction when i build curves for say sideskirts. Ill have to try it on wings. Truly great skills and a great build

I think i can speak for all of us when i say that we are on the edge of our seats to see the complete build.

Not to take away from a beautiful model, which it certainly is, but the Scratch in scratchbuilt doesn't mean modified or converted, it alludes to making something from raw materials.
(I could call my cat a dog, but it doesn't mean it's true or correct.)
Using a similar logic I could call my Seven a Scratchbuilt model, it is not. It is full of truly scratchbuilt parts and sub-assemblies, but it is still a kit based, albeit extra detailed model.

It does a disservice to the true scratchbuilders and fabricators to throw the term "Scratchbuilt" around and apply it to even the best workmanship, if it is not made from scratch.
Would a modified cake baked from a Betty Crocker box ever be considered "Made From Scratch"? Ask your Mother.

Again, none of my point is directed in any negative way at this really nice model or the obvious skills the builder of it has... - Mark

Re: Watch out Skylines. Here comes the Mustang GT-R

The GT-R Concept is powered by Ford Racing's Cammer 5.0 unit, and since the engine isn't available in 1/24 scale, I had to make one myself.

Top left shows the cross-section between the bottom of the engine block and the oil pan(a). Does it look like a crank case?(b) A warehouse?!(c) It's getting to look more and more like an engine block(d).

I roughened up the engine bock by softening the surface with liquid glue and tapping it with a tip of brush(a). But it didn't turn out very rough, so I applied partially dry Mr. Dissolved Putty instead.
I also added details with Evergreen styrene and their half-round rod came very handy(b). Since the transmission case is hidden, it can be anything from a chunk of putty to an accurately scratchbuilt transmission case to fill the space. I borrowed a case from the Mustang Cobra kit, and didn't bother its inaccurate size (c). FYI, the real GT-R Concept is said to have a T-56 6 speed.

The following two pictures show the reason why I'm taking so long to build this model. These are engine mounts, entirely made of styrene. Things like that can be just a pair of rectangular plastic, but I have a photo of the part, and I didn't feel like omitting the details. (I'm such an idiot.)

The shock towers are styrene. I made the top pieces with laminar plastic, and temporaliry glued them to the wheel houses a tiny drop of super glue (top left). Then I used masking tape to make a template (top right). I placed it on a sheet of styrene (middle left), cut out two pieces of flat parts, and combined them with the top pieces (middle right). I also added reinforcement rods(bottom). The shape of the towers (and the whole chassis) isn't so accurate, but I have to save some time, so that's a compromise. (My next 05 Mustang project will have more accurate chassis.)

I broke the shape of a cam cover into several layers, and added details as I stacked one layer after another. The raised details were made by first stretching a heated plastic rod to make a hair-like thin styrene line, and then I curved grooves on the cover and glued short sections of the styrene line (that means the cross-section of the raised detail is hemisphere.) The bottom right picture shows a comparison between the cam cover of the Mustang Cobra kit and my scratchbuilt one. You can tall that mine is slightly larger than the kit part.

Here's another comparison picture.

After all those work, I test fitted the cam covers on the engine block, and checked the clearance.

Re: Watch out Skylines. Here comes the Mustang GT-R

I can't help myself - everytime I read one of your posts, I just burst out laughing at the impossibility of what I am looking at.

I can't my act togther sometimes just glueing a bloody Tamiya kit togther and you MAKE the damn engine!!

Do you use a lathe at all? I don't recall you mentioning it. Is everything you do "hand made"?

Just amazing....

man that is some insane detail. Especially since I've seen a lot of the pics of the parts you're scratch building and you are dead on.
