part that changes air direction from feet to body to defrost

On my 1993 Camry I am unable to change the direction of airflow to any of the middle vents when running heat or a/c. Does anyone know the name of the part or the Toyota part # for the mechanism that makes this happen? My friend (a qualified a/c mechanic) has narrowed my problem down to this and I just need to purchase the part for him to install. The part we are looking for is located under the dash on the driver's side near the steering column.

It appears that it could be one of two things. If it is the switch assembly in the dash, the manual calls it the "heater control". www.toyota-parts-dealer.com refers to it as the "dash control unit". Perhaps the control cable which attaches on the back is broken or has popped off. Has your tech verified which part is the problem ?

My apologies for not mentioning that the part is located under the steering wheel--does that change anything?
