89 525i Fuel Pump Problem

The car has been exhibiting some "hard to start" problems for a while. Often times, it would not start on the first try, but if I release the key and tried again, it would start. Once started it would always run pretty well...

Well, a few days ago it started up, then died out and will not start at all. Cranking is fine, but no hint of firing up....

I found time today to jump the fuel pump relay, and the fuel pump runs... However, it is not pumping any fuel. Car will not start with the pump running, and no fuel comes out the hose to the fuel rail. The fuel filter was replaced about two years ago, so its not totally crudded up... ( I would assume).

I assume I have a bad fuel pump, its probably the orignal... All the parts sites I go to show two pumps, one metallic looking with a pressure regulator sitting up on top, and the other shorter, plastic with the regulator internally mounted...

All of these fuel pumps are $200 - $300. A couple of sites show a "pump only" part (Delphi) for about $95. Does anyone know anything about reparing or rebuilding the fuel pump with this "pump only part"?

Thanks!
