Engine Fan on when car is off

I pulled in the driveway last night turned the car off and the fan kicked on and would not shut off. The engine was not even very warm. It was late and cold and all I could think to do is unhook the ground cable to my battery.
Anybody have the same problem or any ideas why this happened?
