Unhappy Intermittent starting problem. GMMERLIN, go easy on me!

I don't know exactly what the problem is so I don't know what to search for. Sorry (GMMERLIN) if this has been covered many times before.

I have a 2000 Yukon with about 40K miles. Every once in a while it will turn over like it's going to start, but won't keep running. Everyithing seems and sounds just like a normal start, but it dies out. When it happens, if I let it sit for a while and come back, it starts and runs just fine. It seems to be happening more frequently as of late, though. It's my wife's and ten month old baby boy's car, so I am a little concerned that they will get stranded.

Allright, with that said, let me have it GMMERLIN!

Thanks!

Mike

Re: Intermittent starting problem. GMMERLIN, go easy on me!

Hey there. My 2000 Yukon does the exact same thing. It turns over fine and even starts to catch and then doesnt actually start. If you let it sit 10-15 minutes it will start right up. Id say this happens 2-3x a week, out of about 15-20 starts. I took it into the GMC dealership here 3x and they replaced a different part each time (at a cost of $400 a visit). They said it was the security system each time; they replaced the ignition lock cylinder first, then the ignition switch, then the whole security box. It still does it to this day and I am currently about to go to court over a refund for the $1200 I spent to NOT fix my problem.

Have you had any luck with yours? When I receive my money back from the dealership, I am going to take it into a local guy that does nothing but automotive electrical work as I am sure he will be able to locate it. Let me know if you've discovered anything about the problem.

Guys, the common problem is inside the ignition switch. You all have the Passlock II system which ALL OF THEM EVENTUALLY FAIL. This is especially true if you have a very heavy keychain. Inside the ignition is a very delicate magnet setup that is triggered when you turn the key.
hesevil, I can't believe your dealer hasn't figured it out. If they indeed changed the whole thing, they should have covered it. Like I said, the most common is changing the "switch" in the ignition. The second thing is changing out the BCM or at least reteaching it. I'd love to read your repair statement to know what they actually did.
