Brake Rotor Re-surface

92 Accord EX.

I need to re-surface the front rotors. Anyone knows how to take the rotor off? Do I need to take the whole steering knockle off? Do I need a press?

Re: Brake Rotor Re-surface

are you thinking to do this by yourself? i usually have it done at the mechanic shop. what you meant by resurface = grinding your rotors right? well, if so, depends on where you go. the shop i usually go to, they have the machine where they did not have to take the rotors out, just need to take the wheels out and mount the machine and let it does its work while the rotors are still attached on the car.

Re: Brake Rotor Re-surface

Yep, I plan to do it myself, have access to a brake lathe and had done it on other vehicles. Though it looks like not a good idea now.

That kind of brake lathe is call "on vehicle brake lathe". Normally only dealers have it. I checked with couple local garages, they don't have that kind of equipment. The dealer wants $180/rotor just to re-surface. I am not interested in being ripped off by them.

I took the half shaft off, took the 4 bolts attaching the hub bearing to the steering knockle off. Then I got stuck. Can't get the hub off. I need to know if the hub bearing assy is pressed into the knockle, it's not specified in the manual.

Re: Brake Rotor Re-surface

Yeah it's pressed. Brilliant Honda engineering. This is where the on-vehicle lathe comes in handy. Otherwise you are looking at getting it off, and then having to replace the bearings or get them repressed CORRECTLY. You might want to call around some more and see if any shops do it cheaply. I ended up finding a great private mechanic who was extremely cheap and fair for my '90 brake jobs. He knew what he was doing, but wasn't at a dealership or 'Honda Certified', so he was cool and didn't charge $70 an hour for labor. All other cars' brakes, I have no problems doing myself.

Re: Brake Rotor Re-surface

the guys at the mechanic shop, they are certified mechanics, not some cheap non certified race shop mechanics.

never try dealer, we all know about their ridiculous price.

when comes to cars, i don't want to me a smart-ass about it. leave it to the professionals. i mean when comes to major jobs, professional mechanics are required.
