95 grand am quad 4 wont start

We drove this car for about 30 miles and went in to visit with family.came back out about 2 hours later and the car wouldn't start.
We put new spark plugs, boots, and crank shaft senser in it and it still wont start. It seems to be getting gas but it doesn't seem to be firing.
Does anyone have a clue as to what might be wrong with it?
Need some help fast.

Thanks,
April

Re: 95 grand am quad 4 wont start

I had a problem like that with my quad 4 and someone told me that I had to turn the key into the on position, let it sit like that for 10 minutes, turn it off, wait a minute, and then try it. And it actually worked, so if you havent figured it out yet, try that out

Re: 95 grand am quad 4 wont start

townie15, what your describing sounds like part of the security light problem (would show up on the dash), but I don't think that was offered in 95 (its not on my 95, and I have the same car)

Check for spark, 4 old style plug wires & a spark plug (or spark tester) will work
- pull the coil housing cover off and flip it over, start one bolt back into the cam housing
- plug the ignition control module back in
- run 3 plug wires from the coil housing to the spark plugs
- connect 4th wire to spark tester (or spark plug that is grounded)
- crank motor to see if your getting spark

do this for all 4 plugs

if you get spark on 3 of the 4 plug wires = bad coil housing
if you get spark on 2 of the 4 plug wires = bad coil
if you get spark on 1 of the 4 plug wires = change coil housing first, then change bad coil if there is on
if you get no spark = have ignition control module checked at autozone (i've heard they can test it) (but this may not be the problem, see below)

make sure when you turn on the key (before you start it) you get a "service engine soon light", if you don't get this then the computer isn't working, on my car I had a bad power wire to the computer, do some diagonistic work before you buy a new computer. I just had to run a new power wire to the computer and it was "good to go".

Is there anything else in the car that isn't working?
Have you checked the fuses for the computer in the fuse box?
Have you checked the fuseable links (4 wires that come off the starter to power the rest of the vehicle, they attach to the same bolt on the starter that the positive battery cable runs to).

this should give you some places to stat, hope it helps, keep us updated! and post the solution so it helps others.
