Question stranded please help with 4 wheel drive locked in low range and blows fuses

I have a 99 Suburban 4X4 3/4 ton 7.4 I am out of town at freinds and selling the burb. While we were test driving the truck it blew the fuse marked "transfer case" and would not shift in or out. I replaced the fuse we put it in low 4 wheel and the fuse blew again. When I replaced the fuse again it immediately blows again. So now I am stuck in low range and 250 miles from home. I have removed half the dash looking for a module which I am not sure exist. I have removed all the connectors (I believe) from the transfer case and it is still a dead short. I have the switches on the dash unplugged still dead short. Any help would be greatly appreciated... Thanks in advance.. Dave

Re: stranded please help with 4 wheel drive locked in low range and blows fuses

I am not at all familiar with your truck, because mine is a 2000 with the NBS...but I would be seriously evaluating the switch(s). It sounds like you have a short to ground, and since you have eliminated the chance of the problem being at the transfer case, the next logical weak point to me would be the switch...

I'd start checking continuity between ground and the switches...

Re: stranded please help with 4 wheel drive locked in low range and blows fuses

Try putting the shifter in neutral and start it up. Then tyr the fuse. If you are on a hard surface lift the side to let one of the wheels release before you do this. There is also a control on the front diff. If the system is in a bind it can not release. Sounds like you have the drive system in a bind. You need to release the pressure in the drive system if this is the case. Good luck.

Thumbs up Re: stranded please help with 4 wheel drive locked in low range and blows fuses FIXED

Thanks guys for the replies. I had tried all the electrical stuff you guys suggested but no luck. It was only locked in low because that was the range selected when it completely shorted out...

I continued searching last night with different key words and found a couple posts in another area that made sense and led me to the solution. I found the harness that comes through the fire wall and across the engine compartment had rubbed through on the AIR or EGR tube (didn't look that close to see what it was). I simply repaired the 3 burned wires and replaced the fuse and my bad day was over. I worked on this thing looking for the problem (short) several hours including pulling the dash completely apart for nothing. This forum is a great tool when working on anything.

Oh yeah the folks bought it after all the headaches. It was a beautiful truck I miss it already but my job transfered me out of state. Paying for 2 houses made it a luxury I couldn't afford when I only used it to tow the race car.

I would like to say a special thank you to 777Stickman who had given the solution to his own problem (it seems most don't give the solution after it is fixed).. In addition I PMed him to ask him specifically where to look for the short last night thinking by chance he might be on his computer (west coaster) he was not. Tonight after getting it back on the road and headed home 777Stickman called me to see if he could help. Class act all the way, doesn't know me from anyone and willing to help someone half way across the country.. THANK YOU.. Dave
