Angry 93 Grand Am wont start when cold?

Hello, I'm new to this forum and haven't read all the posts yet but am needing some dire help!! I just bought a 93 Grand am from a friend that sat for about a year. I replaced the bettery, fuel tank and pump, and power steering lines. Now I am having problems starting when temp drops below 40. I got it to start the other day while hooked up to jumper cables, but have a brand new battery so that cant be it. It runs fine when warm out, and even fires the second you turn the key. Last night though it hit about 35 and this morning wouldnt start? Fuel pump is working and no promblem lights come on other than low coolant, which is not. It has about 200k but was running fine. It is a 4 cyl btw. Any ideas what is causing this. I have anohter 95 parked in the yard that i can swap parts from.

All help is greatly appreciated. I would hate to lose my new promotion cause my d*mn car wont make it.

Thx again Chris

Welcome to AF!

Replace the fuel pressure regulator. Sounds like the car isn't holding fuel pressure overnight. Also put a can of Restore oil treatment in the car. This will help increase compression and aid in starting.

Good Luck!!

Thumbs up Re: 93 Grand Am wont start when cold?

Thx for the quick reply. I'll be sure to check into that regulator. I did have to put one on order though, so I wont have for a few days.

I did manage to get the car running without it. All I did was spray some strater fluid right into the intake manifold. Took about 5 seconds of spray to get the car running, and then ran fine. I even shut it off for about 5 mins and tried again...Started right up. I am coonvinced there's gotta be too little pressure or fuel reaching the engine.

Do you still think its that regulator? I am gonna make sure the filter and pump are all fine(again) but I wanna be totally sure.
Thx again for the reply and all your help

Chris

Re: 93 Grand Am wont start when cold?

If you have already changed the fuel pump then the only thing that would affect pressure would be the fuel filter or the fuel pressure regulator. You can check the fuel pressure with a fuel pressure guage connected at the fuel rail. Turn the key on and if the pressure does not build to at least 45 PSI then one of these is the problem. If you change the filter and the pressure does not change then do the FPR. Much cheaper than a new fuel pump. Although if you change it and the pressure does not change then that would be your next project. Good Luck!

One other thing check the fuel pump relay. It could also be going haywire.
