Longer oil filter?

On my 94 RS 2.2 I have just started to go to a longer oil filter as it allows me to put exactly 5 quarts of oil instead of the 4.5. Someone at the auto parts store said that an advantage of doing this would be longer frequency between changing the filter, although I am religious on oil changes at 3000 miles. Are there any other possible advantages or disadvantages of going to a bigger oil filter? Thansk Tom

Re: Longer oil filter?

i really dont think there'd be any pro's or con's to a longer filter, your still gonna have to change your oil just as often cuz your engine is still gonna break that oil down just as fast, and you'll still have to change your filter just as often cuz theres no point in changing your oil without changing the filter, so unless theres a price difference, or like you said, you can use 5 quarts even, its not going to make any difference

Re: Longer oil filter?

every filter is different in someway. You cant just slap on a longer oil filter. You could cause problems to you engine. possible make the damn thing blow up. every filter has different properties like oil pressure and compression and other junk like that. There are some filters on some cars that can be changed. Working at Valvoline I know that a VO55 and a VO16 are interchangable on many chevy trucks. but i have never heard anyone doing it on a cavalier. the VO55 is about twice as long as the VO16. There may not be enough space to get it in there. If you would like to make your oil last longer use a full synethic oil. You can go anywhere from 4000-6000 miles on a oil change depending on your driving habits.

Re: Longer oil filter?

Even todays 6.0/5.3 GM V8 engines use pretty tiny filters.A Cavalier would have no need for an extended filter. Most of todays filters (like the Champ labs/AC) have maximized the size of the paper element inside, relative to the can size....so even a small filter has good filter surface area. This wasnt always true.Use a top brand (even cut a new one apart to look at them first) and you should have no problem.WIX/Napa/CarQuest,and ACDelco are good filters. The $1-2 filters arent the greatest.
