Smile K&N air filters worth the extra $$

With the internet you cant always believe what you read obviously. I have alero with 3400 engine I was wondering if K&N air filters are really worth the extra money and if they add the 3-5 horsepower they say they do? If you have had any good experience with or without K&N what brand etc. and also is K&N better if used with a cold air intake compared to a different brand or is there no difference. Thanks guys I appreciate it

The big advantage to the K&N is it is re-useable. You can clean them and then recharge by spraying with K&N filter oil. I really don't believe you get that much of a horsepower increase when installed with a stock air box.

A K&N cone style filter with a cold air intake is much better. If you get a CAI make sure it mounts to take advantage of air from the high pressure area around the front headlight area. I have one with a real K&N cone filter. The filter is located under the fenderwell and out of the engine compartment. A bunch of them up on EBay for the Alero.

Interesting read. Makes you wonder about the filtering efficiency of a K&N filter. Any independent test data on a passenger car available?

I found out today that the oil that is in the K&N air filter could get onto a sencer and hurt your car. Now im not sure how true this is, but thats what i heard. anybody hear of this?

It is possible Andrew. If over oiled, it may contaminate the MAF sensor hot wire elements. The remedy to not use a K&N air filter but apply the tacky oil spray in the re-charge kit lightly and sparingly. Also, it doesn't hurt to clean the MAF sensor with electrical contact or MAF cleaner periodically.

I use K&N style air filters and have no problems. I haven't blown an engine yet due to a K&N filter.

Re: K&N air filters worth the extra $$

Sorry, that's the only fully independant air filter test that I've ever seen.

I personally don't believe the factory tests, where they probably test their filters against a plugged up unit or something like that.

Like Bnaylor said an over oiled K&N air filter might cause havoc with some of the sensors. But I can't see it happening unless someone is careless. We probably get more oil through the system through the PVC system.

Good man. Yeah you've got to watch out nowadays. Cops like nothing better than getting people for DWI/DUI.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!!!!
