4L60/700R4 Automatic 4 speed how long do they last ?

We have a full size Chevy VAN A 1988 G20 3/4 ton ...This has been a GREAT VAN with 175,000 miles on it ...It has a 4L60 4 speed automatic transmission ... I am rebuilding the engine and have it out right now ... The tranny works great and I have changed the transmission fluid every 50,000 miles ... My question is ... HOW LONG DO THESE TRANSMISSIONS LAST ? ... I was thinking I might just put in a rebuilt transmission and I called a transmission shop about this but the transmission shop I called would not tell me how long they last and they wanted $1000.00 to rebuild mine ...BUT my old transmission still works fine ....THANKS ! BOB in Michigan ...

if the fluid is still maintaining it's color, it might be good still... at 175,000 miles, its kinda iffy but if you took care of it, it might last another 175,000 miles. My dad sold his 90 chevy truck that we used to pull our 8000 pound trailer with and it had the 700r4 and a 350, both original and having 180k miles. the trans was starting to shift funny every once in a while though...

i have seen in ads where i live that you can get a replacement 700r4 transmission for about 500 bucks, i dunno about labor though... as for how long they last after a rebuild, i have no idea, but im assuming quite a while.

No way of telling how many miles you are going to get out of them.
If it has lasted this long and it is still working good I would just feed it some good clean fluid and change the filter and drive it.
Even with a rebuild trans there is no telling how it will do.
This one has aleready proved itself to be good just keep on driving it.

no way of telling bob, and you cant swap the 700r4 for a 4l, the styles of how they shift are different (im sure you could, its not worth it) and as far as your phone call to the shop bob, im from michigan also and i am a tech. it is 100% ILLEGAL for ANY shop to give any sort of timeframe on something, its a false promis, if we told someone their tranny has another 100k left on it and it died in 90k we are liable for it 100%, there isn't any respectable shop in michigan that will give you a time frame, but the 4l60E is an awsome transmission, my cousin sold his with his 4.3 with 150k on it, and its now 4 or 5 years later and i see the guy in that truck all the time

If you are worried about it then you can always get it rebuilt, no reason to if its working perfectly though

Depending on how you drive it and how well you take care of your tranny it could last a lifetime................well maybe not
