Any 1.9L turbo diesel drivers out there??

Well I am thinking of upgrading to a 2000 golf 1.9L turbo diesel. Well I did some research and all I was able to find out was that it gets about 50mpg and it's either 90 or 100hp. Is that true, it's that slow or does it do better then that. I currently drive a 96 civic wich get about 33mpg and it's got about 127hp. Would getting the golf be a step back or foward (performance wise) Would like some imput on you golf drivers, how does the car handle and accelerate.

Re: Any 1.9L turbo diesel drivers out there??

I am the proud owner of a 2000 Golf TDI 2door 5 speed. This cars' only drawback is that I didn't buy it sooner than I did. It has 90hp, but you would never know it. It weighs under 2600lbs, and has almost 200lb-ft of torque. It feels peppy with 4 normal sized people in it. It humms along at 75mph with the cruise and the A/C on, and to date the worst fuel mileage I have seen was 48mpg, and the best was just over 52mpg (the winter blend fuel here in the Northeast kills the mileage somewhat). Maintenance is a snap, and using the recommended oil will allow 10,000 mile oil changes. The quality of the engineering on this car is superior, and it drives and handles far better than any car its size I have ever driven. The TDI engine has the familiar rattle, but most people who have driven in the car with me say they would not have guessed it was a diesel if they had not been told so.
In case you hadn't guessed it, I LOVE this car. This thing has got it all over the "Hybrid" crowd, and I believe it to be one of the better kept Automotive secrets going that isn't a secret...
