We recently bought a 99 Sunfire after driving it for awile I noticed that when the car is in park it misses , I have replaced the spark plugs and wires and the coil pack. This did not fix the problem, could someone please give me an idea of what else could be causing this?

Re: 1999 Pontiac Sunfire Question
First of all the car has a distributerless ignition system so you will need to check several items. You replaced the coils, wires and plugs so those are probably out. You may want to try cleaning the throttle body and the idle air control motor as the IAC controls air for idling. If it is dirty it can cause a miss. The other thing to check would be the ignition module. If you have a 4cyl the module is under the center cover along with the coils. Also make sure to check all connections.
Timing is not adjustable as the computer controls the timing. If the car runs ok at all other times I wouldn't worry about the timing issue. |

Re: 1999 Pontiac Sunfire Question
Check the wiring to the injectors and have them cleaned. It sounds like the problem is in the fuel delivery. A can of injector cleaner probably won't clean them well enough. You will have to have a professional cleaning done. One other thing you may want to try is to clean the mass airflow sensor. Remove it and spray the wires with electronics cleaner. These get dirty and can cause a miss. Do this before cleaning the injectors but be careful not to damage it.

Re: 1999 Pontiac Sunfire Question
We have Two sunfires and one cavalier in the family all with 2.4's They all seem to do the same thing. I have replaced everything cleaned everything and the problem has continued. As far as i can tell this is just somthing that these cars do.

Re: 1999 Pontiac Sunfire Question
Pull the plug on that cylinder and see what it looks like. If it is wet or fouled then that will give you some direction. There may be an issue with the injector on this particular cylinder too so check and see if it is working properly. You can purchase a noid light at autozone for a few dollars to check the connection and see if it is working at the proper time.

Ok, I have looked at almost everything on the car, replaced several parts and checked everything that has been posted about my question. I finally took the car to a mechanic got bad news he said the car was not worth fixing that all the wiring was bad and needs all new wiring, thought I would get a second opinion took it to another mechanic he says no codes show up and its probly the spark plugs and to replace with higher quality plugs. My question is could the wiring be causing the miss? or would there be more problems then just the miss? I am not really sure what to do next, any suggestions?

Re: 1999 Pontiac Sunfire Question
The answer is yes!! Go to a wrecking yard and purchase a wiring harness for the car. You should be able to get one for a few dollars. If your is deteriorated then you probably need a replacement. I would just change the wiring in the engine compartment. Since each group of wires plug in to the main harness you should be able to change out the component ones fairly easily and this should cure the problem.
