Re: What radio will work?

There is difference in the connector-it changed in 2001.
There is also a multiplicity of Grand Cherokee head units.
From another site:

"DaimlerChrysler manufactures an incredibly wide variety of radios for their different vehicles, many of which look very similar and have the same sales codes, yet may have small differences in features. When replacing a factory radio with another factory radio, it may be important to try and find the correct model made for your Jeep. For example, some Chrysler radios have the clock display defeated in vehicles that have a separate clock in the dash. Also, due to preprogrammed audio equalization levels that are programmed into the vehicle's body control module, if a signal from the radio is not recognized by the BCM (Body Control Module), the unit will default to a flat curve. Combined with various levels of speakers used from model year to model year, the sound quality of the audio can be reduced."

But I would still try to stick with Chrysler head units.
It could be as simple as getting one with the same connector.
Make sure you have a return policy if it does not work.

Re: What radio will work?

Im pretty sure that even if you get a different chrysler head unit or go and get an aftermarket one, there is always converters for the units. If the wiring is different you can do it yourself or if avaliable, there are quick connectors that go from the head unit to the jeep wiring harness, only like $15.

Re: What radio will work?

I'd check E-Bay. Just do a search on Chrysler Stereo. Just look at the pictures and make sure it will mount in your dash and the back connectors match what you have. I had a AM/FM Cassette CD that went bad and I wanted a CD changer but wanted to stay with a Chrysler to keep the steering wheel controls. So I bought a AM/FM Cassette with CD changer controls and got an Alpine CD changer and adapter at Circuit City. I've been very happy with this setup.

Re: What radio will work?

The plug didn't change until 2002. www.replacementradios.com has several factory original radios for that vehicle. Here is one that is brand new and is plug and play:

Buy from www.crutchfield.com, they give you everything you need, harness, life time tech support etc. You can enter your vehicles info. & they'll show you only the radio's that fit your vehicle. They also have a great 30 day money back guarantee (no return shipping cost). Once you put your order in, you'll have your merchandise within 2-3 days!

Re: What radio will work?

Crutchfield sells aftermarket. ndaniel7 was asking about factory radios. That's why I pointed him/her to www.replacementradios.com

Crutchfield is just as good a choice as any for aftermarket radios but many people don't want to mess with an aftermarket radio. They don't look right in the dash, are harder to operate, require mounting and wiring adapters and get stolen more often.

If you're not trying to rattle the glass and/or entertain people 2 blocks away, the factory original units are more than adequate. A simple speaker upgrade will often suffice if a person desires a little better sound. And that can be done without any of the negatives of the aftermarket radio installations...

My 2 cents...

Re: What radio will work?

Use those sites to get model numbers of what will fit. Then you can start hitting the net and try to hunt up a deal. I know I didn't have to deal with anything fancy like controls on the steering wheel but what I did was look at those sites that told me what would fit and then start hitting Ebay and other places hard. An older model Jensen CM715K was a perfect fit and some places still had them for over $100. I found one for $50 and Pep Boys had the connector for $15. Because it's a 1 1/2 DIN unit it still looks like it belongs there.
