Timing Chain

Hey All

Over here from the Jeep side of the forums with a BMW question. I'm looking at buying a '91 525i. My question is, does it have a timing belt, a timing chain, or both? I have been getting conflicting info. I beleive the 525's had a timing belt up to 1990 and started using a chain in 1991. My '86 325e has a belt, but all the info on it says it has a belt. Thanks in advance!

Re: Timing Chain

80-90 525i has M20 engine (SOHC) with timing belt. I know, mine broke. Ouch.

91-91 525i has M50 engine (DOHC) with timing chains.

This info from my "Bentley book"
