Hard shifting from park and 1st>2nd; High Idle

It's me again . I just replaced the tps yesterday b/c my idle would fluctuate and it solved that problem. However now my 93 bronco 302/5.0 idles at around 1200 RPMs w/ the check engine light on. Also when I shift into drive (E4OD tranny) it kicks in pretty hard and the RPMs drop to about 500-800 but then rise to about 1000(normal I assume). My first to second is more harsh than normal too. There is also hesitation sometimes when I accelerate. I have a new fuel filter that I will try to install but I know that won't solve my idle problem. Could someone please help me. Thank you.

Re: Hard shifting from park and 1st>2nd; High Idle

You need to get that tranny rebuilt ASAP. My 88 AOD didn't ever behave right when I bought it (in 1997, with 56K on it.) The problem just got worse as time went by. I changed the fluid and filter every 10K religiously, and it was only prolonging the inevitable. Near the end, I had to stomp it to 3500 to get it to engage into "Drive". Not long after that, I lost Reverse. It wasn't long after that I lost all my tranny fluid. Then I lost "Drive".

I know it's rough to know that you'll have to rebuild it, but you can get an upgrade kit (with better clutches) to make sure it's the last time you'll have to. One thing you can do about your driving (Which an old friend of mine told me) is to be sure you only shift the gears when the steering is pointed Straight-ahead. It has to do with the 4x4 geometry. Figure that since it's a "4-by" the front wheels are the steering, and part of the drivetrain. As you wheel them around, it puts stress on the driveline. The system is designed to change gears with the front wheels pointed forward, not steering.

I did make it on my old Automatic transmission for about 5 years, but I was never really happy with it. I would have had mine rebuilt as soon as I realized the clutches were burning, but some lunk-head at the Ford Garage broke off one of the dog-ears in the case that hold the starter on. Once that happenend, I had no reason to rebuild that case.
