97 Silverado knocking

Had a couple guys listen to this and they think it is one connecting rod bearing. I agree with that but my question is what is my first step, should I buy a new long block. Should I have my engine takin out and looked at. The engine has 136,000 on it so I'm not sure about everything else.
I've looked around and to find a vortec 350 between 96 and 99 is tuff. Even rebuild kits are hard to find. Does it have a one piece or two piece rear main seal. If anybody can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it thankyou.

You are in luck with a GM. The GM dealer offers good prices on new GM replacement engines. May be up to 3 year or 50K warranty.
Check them out.

Re: 97 Silverado knocking

You should be able to get a long block at a local shop for around 1500.00 or so. If the shop floor or counters are dirty then don't buy there. I got a 95 4.3for 950. with 24k warranty on long block. Got 10k on it now and she runs great. Buy the long block and swap everything from the other motor onto the new. Pretty fast process. You will need your vin code or the block serial numbers. not sure were 97 #'s are at. Good luck, it is a simple swap.

fyi GM does not sell new long blocks after they are 5 years old. You will have to get a reman

Re: 97 Silverado knocking

Is your knock more loud when cold, or does it stay consistant? The reason I ask is that is how my 98 has been acting for the last 30,000 miles loud when cold, almost gone when hot, all gone when the converter locks up. I heard it also could be carbon build up on the piston but don't have the equipment to see inside the sparkplug holes. If anyone has an idea as how to check this I'd like to know. Sorry 94Blackbird, didn't mean to walk on your original question, get the reman. By the time you get done rebuilding your own you may well spend more money and no warrenty.

Are you talking block or complete engine.
I just called my gm dealer and they have a back room full on new engines all years. And the warranty has been upped to 100K on them.
Why fool around with rebuilt when you can have new for a little more?

Re: 97 Silverado knocking

Hey thanks guys, I may have found a totaled '98 with a little over 50k on it. I should know something tomorrow. I friend of mines brother had it as a company truck and it got rearended by a dump truck but it still starts and moves and I can get the whole truck for 700 bucks. If its still there, but if not I think I will go to the GM place and get a Goodwrench motor for about $2100.00 with 100,000 mile warranty or 3 yrs. Thanks alot for your input.
