While the motor is no pushover, they rated them different back then. Still...I am sure she screams.

Re: What do you think about bandit now!
Before I tore my stock motor out it made 376.8 RWHP-370.8 ft/pounds.
Expecting right around 500 RWHP if I can ever figure this thing out. I am not really sure the difference in the ratings man. I wish I knew.

Re: What do you think about bandit now!
i seen a build up in i think it was motor trend or something where they made a 700hp pontiac 350 pretty easily and for not much money, i think around 400 - 500 hp is around what i'm gonna be aiming for, i would've built the 301 just for originality, but parts are extremely hard to find and really expensive, it's a pretty much brand new 301, out of a 78, only have about 6,000 miles or so on it, but i'm trading it for the 350, that's how i'm getting it for free

Re: What do you think about bandit now!
Okay, we have the classic case of apples-to-donuts here...
The '68 400 rated at 360 BHP (Gross brake horse power, measured at flywheel with no accessories) is a Ram Air engine. Are you certain of the two-letter code? What is it? The majority of GTO engines were "350" horse versions. The later engines (post-'71) are rated at "SAE Net" horsepower. That is, at the tailshaft of the most common transmission (in gear), with power steering and A/C operating. Usually a good 20-25% lower than "Gross" ratings for the same engine. Typically, a "350" horse engine will show about 280-290 RWHP in a manual transmission GTO. We have one customer, with a '68 convertible, stock engine (including Q-Jet and iron exhaust) except lowered to 9.5:1 and added a Comp XR276HR cam (mild hydraulic roller). It made 300 RWHP this past Summer. The 350P you saw that "made" over 600 HP is suspect, at best. This information comes from one of the more dubious individuals in Pontiac-land, and has not been verified by ANY independent source. I did see the car in question (red Ventura) at the POCI show in Charleston, WV a couple years ago. Coughing, smoking, bucking, knocking, it had a rough time just driving away from a stoplight... I advise against spending a big wad on 350. Your money would provide MUCH more power and fun spent on a 400... The stroker kit mentioned will make it a BEAST... 572 crater over 700? I don't THINK so... It's advertised as 572. IF it has a GREAT tune on it, and was assembled by someone that gives a s**t (rare at the Chevy plant), it MIGHT break 600. With some changes, it's easily capable of much more. We know of one of those 502 horse 502s, that after an additional $7K, he FINALLY got it to run AND live (both are important). This was done at another local shop. I know about the dyno runs and the internal problems suffered by it. Typical of any production-line Chevy... Crate engines are for convenience, not for high-end racing (unless, of course, you buy one of those Eagle or Merlin jobs, at well over $14K). During the same period of time, we built a 499 Chevy (BB) that made well over 700 (9s in a 3,500 lb. Malibu wagon, no adders) for less than $10K. Moral of the story is: Craters are not necessarily better than a good rebuild. In most cases, a first-class engine shop can make you a LOT more power for less money, and have it specific to YOUR application, instead of the compromises required for "mass production". And putting the Chevy in the Pontiac is NOT "corporate", it's putting a Chevy in a Pontiac... Before '80, Pontiacs did not have Chevys... (except some minor cases like the inline 6 and 307...)
