76 Chevy pickup Tumbler replacement

I lost my only key to my 76 chevy truck. So I decided to replace tumbler. I pulled steering wheel and removed all necessary items. However, I cant' get tumbler out. Does it need to be out of the "lock" position? And if so, how do I get there? Thanks for any help!!!

Re: 76 Chevy pickup Tumbler replacement

nope

if it doesnt have a lock screw then it has a little clip in a slot in there you have to find it and sometimes the slot is covered by casting flash part of the column lock housing,

need a little flat blade

youll find it

alot of times its not poked through and you have to poke it good

some years used a screw and others used the flat clip

good luck

Re: 76 Chevy pickup Tumbler replacement

It doesn't have to be out of the lock position, after removing the lock by pressing in the small slit hole near where the lock body, near the rear of where the lock would be. Use a simple small flat blade screwdriver and a tap on the screwdriver will open the small opening to allow you to removethe lock. Press in on the location of the slit and while pressing down, pull out on the lock. Have a locksmith look at the code on the lock and make you a key or get one any cheap way you want. Remember to replace it back the same way you took it out, (Insert lock, push in till it is seated completely) To make sure your buzzer still works (if you like it to remind you that your key is in the lock(the small engage clip at the rear of the lock needs to be up to insert the small buzzer switch) Reversal of all the parts you took off and you are done.

Your 1976 chev has the half round clip close to the end of the cylinder-Look at new lock cylinder and you will see it. use a small thin flat screwdriver to push in the clip while pulling out on the lock.
