Re: Vice President shoots a lawyer !!

I am not opposed to hunting or even gun ownership as I am a gun owner and have a permit to carry a concealed weapon. Fortunately, I have not had to use it to defend myself or my family.

The debate about the right to bear arms has gone on for a hundred years and will continue to go on for many more. I do however believe that responsible gun owners should not be penalized since 99% of us never use our guns in anger. We do however use them for legal purposes such as hunting or target practice. Unfortunately, criminals don't respect the law and they will have guns when law abiding citizens are not allowed to own them. I am not trying to start a gun debate and if you folks down under don't want to own guns then that is your right. But currently the Bill of Rights in the United States Constitution gives me the right to bear arms as does the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

That is one right that the Government has not taken away from me, at least not as of today although they have tried and I am sure the VP has just given the bleeding heart liberals a much needed boost in their campaign against gun ownership!!!

Speaking of hunting in Australia, specifically the Outback. I don't think I'd want to go into the Outback unarmed. Anyways, sounds like someone down under wants my money to go fishing and hunting there. Supposedly, it's open season on feral animals. See link below:

Sounds like it would be a great experience although costly. I can excercise my right to bear arms even in Australia.

Hunting accidents are something that are gonna happen. Just like in any sport accidents will happen. If you are a racer you are gonna wreck, if you are a bull rider your gonna get stomped, if you play football you are gonna get knocked loopy & if you play hockey your gonna lose teeth. The point is, if you do any kind of sport there are risks. The law of averages will eventually catch up to you. As for hunting accidents it isn't only the other people you have to worry about. I have a buddy that blew off his own ass. Literaly. He was climbing down from a tree stand with a loaded 12ga shotgun strapped to his back when the trigger caught a limb and it took off his right ass cheeck.

Sounds like your friend needs to learn what a safety is. Or maybe not climb down the tree with a loaded shotgun in the first place . And I have yet to know anyone who has been involved in a hunting accident. If you know the people you are hunting with, and dont swing 180 degrees you shouldn't have these kinds of problems. I would like to think that everyone I hunt with pays attention to their line of sight as much as I do. I have been hunting with people that were somewhat careless, and will never hunt with them again. Both parties may be in the wrong here, but Cheney was obviously careless. And whats with this "shooting in the direction where they heard noise" crap? What kind of moron would shoot towards a noise?? How in the hell would you know what you were shooting at!?
Guns used for hunting are not going to be taken away from any of us in the near future, so I don't know why people always want to bring this up. There are way too many hunters on both sides of the political spectrum for this to happen.

Re: Vice President shoots a lawyer !!

Anyone catch the interview that Cheney did on FOX News? I'm pretty sure there's a youth softball league somewhere that would be the perfect candidate for Brit Hume's pitching skills. Cheney isn't exactly on the money either.

http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/02/...ey.transcript/

Favorites of mine from the interview:

Question: Now, is it clear that -- he had caught part of the shot, is that right?

Cheney: -- part of the shot. He was struck in the right side of his face, his neck and his upper torso on the right side of his body.

Question: And you -- and I take it, you missed the bird.

Cheney: I have no idea. I mean, you focused on the bird, but as soon as I fired and saw Harry there, everything else went out of my mind. I don't know whether the bird went down, or didn't.

Clearly, what's important here is whether or not he hit the damn bird?

Also:

Question: Well, what -- you must have recognized, though, with all your experience in Washington, that this was going to be a big story.

Cheney: Well, true, it was unprecedented. I've been in the business for a long time and never seen a situation quite like this. We've had experiences where the president has been shot; we've never had a situation where the vice president shot somebody.

Question: Not since Aaron Burr.

Cheney: Not since Aaron Burr --

Question: Different circumstances.

Cheney: Different circumstances.

Wow.

And:

Question: There is reporting to the effect that some in the White House feel you kind of -- well, look at what Scott McClellan went through the last couple days. There's some sense -- and perhaps not unfairly so -- that you kind of hung him out to dry. How do you feel about that?

Cheney: Well, Scott does a great job and it's a tough job. It's especially a tough job under these conditions and circumstances. I had a bit of the feeling that the press corps was upset because, to some extent, it was about them -- they didn't like the idea that we called the Corpus Christi Caller-Times instead of The New York Times. But it strikes me that the Corpus Christi Caller-Times is just as valid a news outlet as The New York Times is, especially for covering a major story in South Texas.

Question: Well, perhaps so, but isn't there an institution here present at the White House that has long-established itself as the vehicle through which White House news gets out, and that's the pool?

Cheney: I had no press person with me, no coverage with me, no White House reporters with me. I'm comfortable with the way we did it, obviously. You can disagree with that, and some of the White House press corps clearly do. But, no, I've got nothing but good things to say about Scott McClellan and Dan Bartlett. They've got a tough job to do and they do it well. They urged us to get the story out. The decision about how it got out, basically, was my responsibility.

Question: That was your call.

Cheney: That was my call.

Question: All the way.

Cheney: All the way. It was recommended to me -- Katharine Armstrong wanted to do it, as she said, and I concurred in that; I thought it made good sense.

>>>>>>>>>>

Well, of course you go with the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, because everyone in the country reads that one -- I mean, who's ever heard of The New York Times or The Washington Post?

Why not just call the White House immediately and let them handle the press? I'm sure "the Vice President just accidentally shot a partner while hunting in Texas" is a valid reason for ringing up the oval office on a Saturday evening.

I also like the fact that, on several occasions, Cheney is sure to make note of Katharine Armstrong as being a key figure in the press decision, which (as I mentioned before) was an effective way to buy some wiggle-room for the VP.

One final snippet from the interview (this is after Hume has effectively steered the whole thing entirely away from the hunting topic):

Question: There have been two leaks, one that pertained to possible facilities in Europe; and another that pertained to this NSA matter. There are officials who have had various characterizations of the degree of damage done by those. How would you characterize the damage done by those two reports?

Cheney: There clearly has been damage done.

Question: Which has been the more harmful, in your view?

Cheney: I don't want to get into just sort of ranking them, then you get into why is one more damaging than the other. One of the problems we have as a government is our inability to keep secrets. And it costs us, in terms of our relationship with other governments, in terms of the willingness of other intelligence services to work with us, in terms of revealing sources and methods. And all of those elements enter into some of these leaks.

Something about that last statement just doesn't sit right with me.

I saw a bumper sticker the other day:

"I'd rather go quail hunting with Dick Cheney than ride with Ted Kennedy."

Re: Vice President shoots a lawyer !!

Yeah, that's it. I couldn't recall the exact phrasing, but the message is pretty clear.

People carry on about GW, and he's not perfect by a long shot, but there are lots of people in congress with a lot of skeletons in their closets. (pun intended)
