96 SE tranny problem.
Well, I had heard a slight noise coming from the front of my 96 Maxima SE (164k miles) for a little while but had never had any other issues until yesterday.
I am just going down the road at about 65 MPH when it sounds like I somehow slipped the shifter into "N", the RPM's rose fast before I could take off my foot from the gas. But I wasn't in N, I was still in "D" Anyway, no power, so I slowly stop and have no gears...Nothing... Towed to a tranny shop now, they should be about to let me know whats up. Any idea's guys? Thanks much

Re: 96 SE tranny problem.
Quote:
The problem with tranny shops is that typically they have no clue on electronics. AND: Max A/T is totally computer controlled. If this is simple like solenoid/wire/connector -failure, they still swap the tranny. Thats what they understand and it profits most; "no other choice" ...they will tell.... Yes, problem might become corrected, but price is 20x... Before accepting any work from their part, compare spare tranny prices, availability. Ask multiple shops of swap price. Now you have a start point in negotiations... Start from tranny self diag, oil Check/swap, electrical checks. Check link(s) below, read ALL, start from p.24 and A/T educate uself before allowing the shop proceed on billin you.

Re: 96 SE tranny problem.
Good advice. thanks abunch...
I heard some bad mechanical sounds, so I am thinking the worst, but checking for other available tranny's is a good idea as well! So much for my 2 month old 96 MAD Max...UGH!
