Actually you have a 4l60e (the 700r4 ended in 92). It sounds like your valve body is starting to (common)... Have you checked for stored codes?

proper fluid and level ?

Mine has leak at front shaft seal, dripping from torque convertor bottom cover drain hole. When level gets too low it has trouble changing gears. Topping it up fixz that.

does this model use vacuum line for operation ? that may be off, cracked, plugged with water/ice.

maybe internal belts need adjusting or replcement. shop may be able to check and adjust with just the pan off. i dunno.

Re: transmission not wanting to shifting

this may sound off the wall and un-related at first but bear with me....
Cam's suggestion made me think, if you have the 4l60E model that uses vacuum modulation for the throttle pressure, the diaphragm inside the modulator may be ruptured.....

1st question, does the vehicle smoke?
if so pull the hose off the modulator on the transmission, if it has ANY trace of fluid, replace the modulator.

#2, even if the vehicle doesn't smoke, check this hose carefully, or just replace it....worst case it'll cost you a few bucks, and that hose is prone to being torn, hit by debris, and just rotting out over time from all the junk it's exposed to. even a small crack in it can cause the problem mentioned below.

if the diaphragm is ruptured, it is basically a loss of vacuum. with a loss of vacuum, the transmission thinks that you are at wide open throttle, thus causing late, possibly slightly harder shifts.

Re: transmission not wanting to shifting

my understanding on the 4/60e is that is has 2 shifting silnoids in the trans.
the computer tells the trans. to shift.even tried to manual shift and no help.
there is no check engine light on.
my truck is 4x4 and the light showing 4x4 or 4x2 is says 4x4 all the time even when its not.
thank for your time,Joe O'Bryan

If you mean the little round dot light, mine does that too. Just a detector below 4x4 stickshift warn or dirty. But it's not in 4wd unless the bigger front axle light is on, which is triggered when the front axle cable is holding out the shaft entering front diff. Easy to confirm by checking vacuum diafram that pulls other end of that cable on right fender.

Re: transmission not wanting to shifting

check engine mounts, tranny mounts and tranny to engine bolts. mine had slight vibration. nothing visibly wrong until noticed few upper hard to see tranny-engine bolts were missing.
