Fm13???

I was thinking about a cam for my 01 WS6. I heard the FM14 is a great cam. Other than that what other cams would you recomend. I want something equally expensive and powerful as the FM13. Are cams worth it, and what kinda gains will i see with a good tune???

Re: Fm13???

Here is my 226/234 554/575 112 gains without a tune....

Keep in mind though...a cam install is probably at least $1000 if you do it yourself. More if you get new oil pump.
Too bad you can't bring it here...I work cheap. Feed my fatass and give me beer.

Re: Fm13???

Do i need all the bolt ons. I was told the cam breaths better with all the bolt ons. I dont have headers, all i got is a catback, lid, off road y pipe. What equipment is needed to install a cam and how much time will it take?

Re: Fm13???

My first cam install took me an entire weekend. Glad mine isn't a daily driver because I got stuck Sunday night...had to finish up little stuff Monday after work. Of course, I didn't have a good valvespring compressor.

You will NEED....
Cam, new valvesprings, new coolant, new oil, loctite.

I recommend....
LS6 ported oil pump, LS2 timing chain, hardened pushrods.

Valvesprings depend on the lift/duration of the cam. Anything over a 235- 240 duration or 595-600 lift I recommend duals. Anything below those figures Comp 918's with titatium retainers.

Bolt-ons are best done before a cam. Headers are almost a must to allow the motor to exhaust the larger cam more efficiently. And of course...you have to make sure it is getting the air it needs.

How many miles on your motor??
Any noticeable ticks when running?

Re: Fm13???

its got 80K right now. I saw this kid putting cams on his car and he had this lifter kinda thing. Yeah ur right it took him a solid day to do it with the help of some friends. The cams gonna cost what like $400-$450 MAX right. How long will headers take to put on. Do i need to put the car on the lift to do it.

At 80K miles, I would actually VERY much so recommend the oil pump and timing chain. Pushrods most likely as well.
Lifters....hard to say. Heads have to come off to replace those. Also...if you run the stock lifters...you need to make sure they don't fall when the cam is removed.
The cam itself costs $400 roughly. Add all the other stuff to that.
I didn't put on a new chain or new pump, and mine still ran me about $1000 and I installed it myself. I did get new pushrods and I went with overkill valvesprings (Patriot duals).
Headers....Depends on the header. Some fit a bit better than others. Expect 5-6 hours for someone new to the LS1. Maybe even a little longer.

Re: Fm13???

Ok. I'll offer up my humble opinion.... as well.... brother Luos is accurate-

Cam(your choice)..... $429.00

With that said.... bigger is not "always" better. I made 416/406 with a little itty bitty baby Lunati T1 cam(221/558, 112 LSA, 108* ICL). Currently making the #'s in the sig w/a FMS F11 cam(228/230, 111, 109). While these #'s are w/(good)heads and full bolt on's, the point I'm trying to make is that small cams "can" make very nice(street friendly)power(given the combo is "MATCHED".

Dual Spring Kit Thunder racing( www.thunderracing.com )#63-26921-KIT Comp Cams 26921 Dual Spring Kit - Suitable to .650 lift with more aggressive ramp-rate cams - Kit includes valve springs, titanium retainers, spring seats, valve stem seals and instructions..... $599.99

Push rods # 99-PR7400 Thunder Racing Heat Treated Chrome-Moly Pushrods, 7.400" (Stock length LS1)..... $109.99

These are needed to deal w/the higher rpm's/spring pressures you'll need to run to reap the benifits of the cam.

Timing chain #88-HME-G68VC-60 JWIS LS1 Timing Chain ..... $149.99

I would not even consider doing a cam swap w/out a new chain on an 80k mile motor. "wouldn't be prudent".....

LS1/LS2 Basic Camshaft Swap Thunder Racing #111-10-LS Gasket Package includes: GM Water Pump Gaskets, GM Timing Cover Gasket, GM Timing Cover Seal, GM Valve Cover Gaskets, GM Harmonic Balancer Bolt ..... $58.99

Again, with your current mileage, if it were me, all gaskets would be replaced. Leaks suck.

Oil pump #99-LS1-OP Thunder Racing Modified LS6 Oil Pump..... $149.95
GM LS1 Oil Pump to Pick-Up O-Ring #20-12557075..... $4.99

Mr. Luos is absolutely right. A must have. Nothing like doing a cam swap to see low or no oil pressure.

Rent the valve spring tool, and pulley pullers(for the power steering pulley and crank pulley)for a small fee from AutoZone etc. and be refunded the money when you return the tools.

HAYNES MANUAL ..... $15.00

LS1 Edit/wideband dyno tune..... $450.00(ish)

Add fluids(fresh oil/filter change), and coolent, and you're on your way for about $18-2000.00 doing the work yourself.

EDIT* Unless you're willing to play Russian Roulette w/the 80k mile lifter retainers, 16 pen magnets to hold up the lifters from falling into the oil pan, or a lifter tool will be an additional cost not entered into the above.

On your application, the "dot to dot" method should be fine, although I ALWAYS dial in my cams to insure the cam delivered is what I bought, and to insure valve events are where their "supposed" to be.

Goin' fast ain't cheap.

Good luck-

Re: Fm13???

I guess. Just used that as an example of approximate price, and items needed.

Not "trying" to break the poor guy
